Nexen Nfera SU1 Tire Review & Rating

The Nexen Nfera SU1 ultra-high performance tire is designed to deliver optimal performance on both wet and dry road conditions. Built for drivers of sport coupes and performance sedans, the SU1 has a number of features intended to enhance traction, steering response, and overall handling.

4G Tread Compound Technology and the tire’s asymmetric tread pattern are made to provide dependable dry and wet traction throughout the year. Larger shoulder blocks and unique rib blocks deliver more precise handling and cornering stability. Nexen has stiffened the tread blocks to give the SU1 increased cornering grip at higher speeds.

Nexen Nfera SU1 Tire Review

For added safety and traction on wet pavement, Nexen has created a 3D block design that optimizes the sipes for enhanced grip on wet roads. Three large circumferential grooves channel away the water and minimize hydroplane risks.

Ride comfort has been addressed through an optimized tread pattern that Nexen says will lower outside road noise.

This model is available in a massive array of sizes ranging from 15-20 inches, and you’ll find V, W, and Y-speed ratings. There’s also a 25K mile tread life warranty included as well.

Pros

  • Very good grip on dry and wet road surfaces
  • Responsive steering and tight cornering
  • Ride is comfortable with lower pattern noise
  • Low cost

Cons

  • Treadlife could be better

Overall Thoughts

Value-priced tires are often hit or miss; sometimes you win, while most times you end up getting less than you expected. However in the case of Nexen’s SU1, you can expect a pleasant surprise-this tire is not only reasonably priced, but for the most part it actually lives up to its advertised level of “ultra-high” performance.

As a summer tire, it’s reasonable to expect that this tire would provide you with excellent grip on dry road conditions. It doesn’t disappoint with its responsive steering, braking, cornering, and overall stability. Furthermore, the tire also performs very well in wet road conditions, with reliable design elements that enhance traction and significantly reduce the chances of hydroplaning.

Unfortunately, the tire’s major downside is its low tread life. Before wear sets in, the tire’s performance is excellent-but tread wear is rapid, particularly compared to similar UHP summer tires in this class.

Overall though, for the performance and lower price, this is not a bad option for anyone looking to increase the performance of their vehicle without spending an arm and a leg on new tires. Just don’t expect them to last forever if you’re a more spirited driver.

  1. I have these as new on a 2013 Fiat 500 Abarth.

Decent traction in dry warm conditions. A little squirrely in the wet. You have to watch it just after a spring shower. The abarth is already a short wheelbase car so loose grip after a rain can be an issue.

Still though, a decent tire for the money. Way better than the Conti-pro contacts the car used to have. Those were like racing slicks after 20K miles.
