Mastercraft Courser MSR Tire Review & Rating

The Mastercraft Courser MSR winter tire has been developed for drivers of pickups, SUV’s, 4×4’s and commercial vehicle that must have reliable traction for driving in difficult winter road conditions. (The MSR is pinned for adding studs if you live in areas that allow studs.)

Mastercraft uses what they call “Snow-Groove Design Technology” on the Courser MSR that is designed to increase snow and ice traction. It works by providing biting edges that effectively create added grip, as well as increasing snow retention in the outer circumferential grooves of the tire.

Mastercraft Courser MSR Tire Review

This ‘snow on snow’ traction gives the MSR more bite than ‘snow on rubber’ traction. It works very well on this tire and is an area frequently mentioned as a real plus in reviews from other drivers.

In addition to the new technology used in the tread, the Mastercraft Courser MSR, built by Cooper Tire, also utilizes D-Squared sipes around the tire that further enhance grip on wet, snow and ice covered road surfaces. Mastercraft has made these sipes much deeper in the tread to extend performance for many more miles.

The Courser MSR features the mountain/snowflake emblem denoting it is severe weather rated. Mastercraft offers a range of 14-20 inch sizes, and all tires come with a limited tread warranty.

Pros

  • Plows through deep snow with ease
  • Traction on hard-pack is very good
  • Treadlife
  • Value for the money is exceptional

Cons

  • Wet traction at higher speeds
  • Lack of LT sizes

Overall Thoughts

There are a number of budget-based truck/SUV winter tires available today, but the Mastercraft Courser MSR is one of our picks for the best in this group. Its performance in the most difficult winter road conditions is up to what you find from the bigger names in the business.

We’ve heard from many drivers that they have driven through snowstorms, freezing rain and thick hard-pack with relative ease. On top of that, treadlife has proven to be better than average. The only area we can find that could be improved on would be a boost in wet traction. That said, this is an area that plagues most every winter tire.

There’s really not a lot that we can add on this model other than to say that if you’re looking for a dependable snow tire that will save you a considerable amount of money, this is a solid choice.
