Bridgestone Potenza RE040 Tire Review & Rating

Providing a balance of high performance traction with well-mannered driving comfort is what the Bridgestone Potenza RE040 is designed to deliver. This high-performance summer tire has also been used as original equipment on vehicles like the Toyota MR2, Nissan 350Z, BMW 3 series and many other performance vehicles.

The tires come with a high grip tread compound that has been molded into a directional tread pattern for superior traction in dry and wet weather conditions. A continuous center rib and large rectangular tread blocks are built to increase grip on dry roads, while circumferential and lateral tread grooves get rid of water and provide stability for wet weather driving. They aren’t suited for snow or wintry conditions but certainly handle rain and shine well.

Bridgestone Potenza RE040 Tire Review

Twin steel belts reinforced by spiral wrapped nylon stabilizes the tire, provides high speed handling, and increases performance while minimizing weight. You’ll find the RE040 in a wide range of 15 to 19 inch sizes along with W and Y-speed ratings.

Pros

  • High quality Bridgestone design
  • Great traction and all round stability
  • Good in dry conditions

Cons

  • Wet grip could be better
  • Treadlife

Overall Thoughts

While we really like the performance of the RE040 in some areas, it falls shorts in several others. Traction and handling on dry road surfaces is certainly a plus with this tire. It provides quick steering and good feedback for the most part. Cornering performance is equally as impressive for this tire.

On the flipside is the relatively poor wet traction. It simply does not perform as well as others in its class. Treadlife is another problem area, although to be fair with a 140 UTQG rating you pretty much know to expect that.

Overall this is not a bad original equipment tire, however, for a replacement we would recommend looking at the Bridgestone Potenza RE760 Sport or BFGoodrich Sport Comp-2 among many others as a better option in this class.
