Dunlop Winter Maxx Tire Review & Rating

The Dunlop Winter Maxx is a studless ice and snow tire that is built for use on a wide range of coupes, sedans, minivans and crossover vehicles. While most winter tires feature a directional tread design, the Winter Maxx has a unique asymmetric pattern. (Asymmetric patterns are generally quieter than their symmetric counterparts.)

Dunlop uses a silica enhanced Nano-Fit rubber that is more flexible and rigid for increased grip in all types of winter conditions. Independent tread blocks combine with this asymmetric pattern to deliver capable traction and handling on wet, snow, black ice, packed snow and slush.

Wider tread grooves and lugs give additional traction and handling in wet and icy conditions. This is further enhanced by the Maxx Sharp Edge and Miura-Ori sipes, that allow these tires to bite into snow and ice more effectively than many of their competitors.

Jointless Band Technology used in the tread makeup creates a comfortable ride quality, while adding strength and durability. Dunlop offers a number of 13 to 19-inch sizes that come with either an R or T-speed rating. The Winter Maxx is covered by Dunlop’s limited tread warranty.

Pros

  • Handling, control, traction and braking in snow and slush
  • Comfortable ride
  • Treadwear

Cons

  • Ice and hard-pack acceleration/braking
  • Major increase in steering response

Overall Thoughts

It seems that the Winter Maxx delivers a mixed bag of results for the most part. On the positive side you can expect good traction and stability in light to deeper amounts of snow, as well as a comfortable ride quality and decent treadlife.

On the negative side we were surprised with the steering response. It’s slower than most winter tires and does not inspire much in the way of confidence, especially on icy surfaces. Beyond that, acceleration and braking on ice and hard-pack snow is not as good as other tires at the top of this class.

Overall, while this is not a “bad” tire by any means, we feel it ranks in the lower half of the studless winter tire category. Other models like the Bridgestone Blizzak WS80 and Michelin Xi3 both provide much higher all-around performance.
