Yokohama YK-HTX Tire Review & Rating
Recently released in the summer of 2014, the Yokohama YK-HTX is designed as an all-season tire for drivers of all types of trucks, SUV’s and crossovers. Yokohama has incorporated a number of new design features for a longer lasting tread, enhanced ride comfort and increased year round traction.
Orange oil has been added to the tread compound to go with a high silica content. The result is a tire that performs well on wet road surfaces and is more pliable in cold temperatures. This type of compound also allows the tire to wear much better for extended tread life.
Yokohama has optimized the contact patch and the sidewall which further enhances treadwear, while delivering added steering response and handling. Adaptive shoulder blocks around the outer tread provide a quiet ride quality for the life of the tire.
Wet pavement is an area this tire excels on due in part to the tread compound and further improved on with triple 3-D sipes. There are literally thousands of added sipes that deliver more bite on rain, snow and ice to increase performance, overall tire stability and safety.
Inside the tire you’ll find two steel belts with a polyester cord body that add strength and durability. Yokohama backs the tire with up to a 70,000 mile warranty. The YK-HTX is available in a wide variety of 15-20 inch sizes.
Pros
- Outstanding all-season traction, especially on wet pavement and in snow
- Quiet ride quality
- Comfortable riding tire
- Long lasting treadlife with an excellent warranty
Cons
- Not the best in light off-road use
Overall Thoughts
The new Yokohama YK-HTX is in the same class as the Michelin Defender LTX MS or General Grabber HTS60 among other top performing light truck and SUV tires. Yokohama has obviously spent a lot of efforts with the tread compound and traction on wet/snow covered roads and it shows. We rank it right up with the better tires in this class.
Expect to find a comfortable and quiet ride, especially on those longer highway trips. While performance on light off-road terrain is not terrible by any stretch, it could be better. To be fair though, this is not a tire designed for rugged off road or all-terrain use.
Overall, this is a solid choice in an all-season tire for your truck, SUV or crossover. It comes in costing less than the Michelin, and the performance does not disappoint.
