Hankook Optimo H428 Tire Review & Rating

The Optimo H428 from Hankook is used as original equipment on vehicles like the Chevy Sonic and Hyundai Elantra among others. Designed for drivers of coupes and sedans, the H428 features all-season traction and handling to go with a smoother ride.

An all-season tread compound is branded with the M+S emblem for increased traction year round. The tire’s shoulder design and grooves enhance dry traction and give this model adequate cornering performance. Don’t expect too much out of this tire in the corners because that is not what it is engineered to provide.

Hankook Optimo H428 Tire Review

Circumferential grooves and lateral grooves aid in wet surface handling and evacuating water from under the tread. The tread compound used in the tire’s makeup also helps reduce road noise. Many reviews from other drivers have stated how quiet this tire rides.

Inside the tire you will find two steel belts and a polyester cord body for added strength and durability, as well as enhanced ride comfort. Hankook offers 15-17 inch sizes, and the tire sports an H-speed rating.

Pros

  • Dry traction is very good
  • Steering feel
  • Ride is comfortable

Cons

  • Softer sidewall lessens corning performance
  • Wet grip
  • Winter handling is non-existent
  • Treadlife

Overall Thoughts

The Hankook H428 finds most of its use as original equipment, and that is likely also its best use. While areas such as ride comfort, dry traction and steering response are not that bad overall, this tire simply has far too many other issues that diminish its performance.

Unfortunately, traction on snow and ice is basically non-existent. Review after review from other tire owners tell of how bad this tire is in winter conditions. Parking the car could very well be your best decision when faced with driving in snow and ice on this model. In addition, grip on wet pavement is poor. Again, numerous drivers have spoken of the vehicle sliding and hydroplaning when it rains. Finally, treadwear is another area this tire performs poorly.

Overall, there’s not a lot we can add that hasn’t already been said by other tire owners. We would not recommend this tire and feel there are other Hankook all-season tires that would make for a much better option.

  1. These tires are absolutely horrible! I bought a brand new 2014 chevy sonic in june 2014. These tires came with the car and at 9000 miles I had to replace my front two due to barely any tread on them. I called hankook and complained. They sent me to the only tire place they would do credit which is almost a hour away from me. They only gave me a 30% credit for tires I should not be replacing for a good while yet! Absolutely ridiculous! I nearly wreck 6 times because of those tires! I dunno how hankook can put horrible tires on brand new cars! I know I’m definitely not happy and I will make sure everyone knows not to buy these crap tires!

  2. The road noise on these is very noticeable when the tread wears down. Rough roads are still very loud and cornering is terrible compared to other tires like Yokohama, loved those on my Lancer, great tires.

  3. HONKOOK OPTIMO H428 they came on a new CHEV. SONIC.

The tires have a very thin sidewall and don’t corner very well. They slip on wet roads.

I had a busted side wall in the first week and could not find a replacement. I had to buy a new tire that did not match. The car dealer said he could get one put it would take 5 to 6 days. Chev should not but tires on there car that replacements can not be found. Not very happy with the tire or Chev. at this point.
