Continental ContiTrac TR Tire Review & Rating

Providing all-season traction and handling is what the ContiTrac TR from Continental is engineered to do. Developed for drivers of pickups and SUV’s, the ContiTrac TR is also used as original equipment by several manufacturers today.

An all-season tread compound features a staggered tread pattern that is built to deliver increased traction in all types of year round weather conditions. More on that below in our overall thoughts. The tire’s continuous center ribs and lateral grooves work to enhance steering response and provide added driving comfort.

Four circumferential grooves channel away water on wet road surfaces. They increase wet handling performance and reduce the risk of hydroplaning for added safety.

Inside the tire you will find two steel belts that add strength and durability to the tread. The tread grooves are designed to self-clean themselves of mud and snow. Continental offers 17-18 inch sizes in the TR, and LT models feature an E load rating for drivers who need added load capacity.

Pros

  • Dry traction is very good
  • Steering provides good feel
  • Ride is mainly quiet and comfortable

Cons

  • Poor snow and ice traction
  • Treadlife is an issue for many

Overall Thoughts

Due to the high quality that Continental is known for, we were expecting good things from the ContiTrac TR. Unfortunately, the tire does not live up to expectations. Yes, there are some good things this tire has going for it. Dry traction is very good, and the steering is crisp and responsive. Ride comfort is good for the most part as well.

On the other hand the negatives are just too much to overcome. Traction on wet road surfaces is not up to Continental standards, and on snow and ice it gets worse. Reviews and ratings from other drivers say the same thing…the tire does not perform well in winter weather conditions. The same can be said for traction off-road, whether in light terrain or not. Finally, treadlife is another area where the TR receives poor marks.

Overall, we can’t recommend this model. If you are looking for a replacement for this tire we would suggest tires like the Michelin Defender LTX M/S, Firestone Destination LE 2 or General Grabber HTS60 among others as better options for your vehicle.
