Yokohama W Drive V905 Tire Review & Rating

The W.drive V905 from Yokohama is a high-performance winter tire built for drivers of all types of sport coupes, performance sedans and sportier SUV’s and crossovers. Released in early 2015 as an eventual successor to the popular W.Drive tire, this model is designed to provide dependable traction and a higher level of handling in rough winter weather conditions and colder temperatures.

Yokohama’s engineers spent considerable time in developing an all-new silica and orange oil compound. The goal here was to have a tread compound that is not only durable and able to handle even the most extreme of winter driving conditions, but one that also lowers the rolling resistance and adds a bit more fuel economy as well.

Yokohama W Drive V905 Tire Review

An asymmetric directional tread pattern combines with unique triple 3-D sipes to give the tire additional biting edges for improved grip on snow, slush, and ice. The tire’s zig-zag circumferential grooves and angled lateral grooves work to further enhance traction in deeper snow and on thicker ice.

The 3-D sipes and added stiffness in the shoulder blocks help deliver increased handling performance on dry or wet road surfaces, even in much colder temperatures. These design features allow the tire to not only remain flexible in cold temperatures, but give drivers a little extra boost in acceleration and braking response that is needed in winter driving conditions.

This tire is available in sizes ranging from 16-22 inches, and comes with either a V or W-speed rating. A limited tread warranty is also included.

Pros

  • Excellent performance in snow, ice, and wet road conditions
  • Maintains handling and response even at higher speeds in cold temperatures
  • Fuel efficient design

Cons

  • Treadlife may be shorter for more spirited drivers

Overall Thoughts

The W.drive V905 isn’t the first jump that Yokohama has made into the winter tire market, however it shows a marked improvement over its predecessor, the W.drive V902B, or the original W.drive for that matter. With a robust set of cold-weather driving features, the tire won’t just help keep you on the road-it’ll help keep you safe. And that’s where this tire really shines: traction and handling response in snow, slush, and ice is excellent, even at a fast pace. The tire also allows you to drive with confidence in dry or wet road conditions. Compared to similar tires in its class, Yokohama’s offering is remarkably stable.

The primary shortcoming of the tire is likely its treadlife for drivers who like to push the limits with cornering and acceleration on dry pavement. That said, it can only be expected when you’re speaking of a winter tire.

Overall, this newer W.Drive V905 compares favorably against the like of similar models from Michelin, Pirelli and Continental. It delivers as advertised and you can’t ask for much more than that. We rank it in the upper half of the high performance winter class.

  1. Great winter tire. Just put them on my civic Si coup and I feel like I have a lot more control and stability. We don’t get a lot of snow in Vancouver BC but we sure do get a lot of cold rain. These tires handle really well in wet conditions. I also have the Yokohama ADVID ENvigor for my summer driving and I’m not disappointed. Great tire. I will definitely buy Yokohama again.

I originally had michelins for summer and Bridgestone blizzacks for winter. And Yokohama beats them in price, quality and performance.
