Yokohama Avid S33 Tire Review & Rating

The Yokohama Avid S33 is designed to provide standard all-season traction and handling for drivers of coupes, sedans and minivans. Used mainly as original equipment on vehicles like the Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town and Country among others, the S33 is available as a replacement option as well.

An all-season tread compound and symmetric tread design are created to enhance year round performance and ride comfort. Larger outside shoulder blocks increase dry traction and steering response, while also providing additional cornering stability.

Yokohama Avid S33 Tire Review

Three circumferential grooves are designed to channel away water from under the tread and reduce the risk of hydroplaning. We talk more about how well this works in our overall thoughts on the tire. The S33 features the M+S symbol which means it should be able to provide a little better winter performance, but unfortunately that’s not the case with this model.

Inside the tire you will find two steel belts for added strength and durability. A polyester cord body increases ride comfort and promotes more even treadwear. Yokohama offers sizes ranging from 15-16 inches, and includes a limited tread warranty.

Pros

  • Dry traction and handling
  • Good overall stability
  • Smooth and comfortable ride

Cons

  • Poor wet and winter traction
  • Shorter tread life
  • No mileage warranty on tread life

Overall Thoughts

You would expect that since the S33 is original equipment on the Town & Country and Grand Caravan, that performance would be up to par. That’s just not the case here. Sure, the tire is comfortable to ride on in most cases, and dry traction and overall stability is good. But there’s no overlooking the negatives that far outweigh the pluses on this tire.

Traction on wet surfaces is among the worst in the all-season class. Other drivers have mentioned hydroplaning is a big issue for them. Driving on snow and ice with this tire is challenging at best. The shorter than expected treadlife only further adds to the problems this tire faces.

Overall, we rank the Avid S33 near the bottom of its class. For a standard all-season model we would recommend tires like the Continental TrueContact, Michelin Defender T+H and General Altimax RT43 as much better options.

  1. There are not yet 5,000 miles on these tires. At my Toyota dealership’s recommendation, I had them mount and balance four at the same time, and do a 4 wheel alignment.

Two tires have been replaced at different times within 500 miles of one another. Nails destroyed the tires, they could not be patched. The tires became noisy within 1,000 miles. The shoulders wear quickly. The car has been aligned two more times, with no improvement in tread wear. Just a lighter wallet. 2015 Toyota Corolla.

    Thoroughly disappointed.

  2. I’ve had THREE hazard failures with these Yokohamas… picking up nails in the outermost section, ruining two almost new tires. Another one just wouldn’t hold air though appeared undamaged.

SO, these Yokos on Caravan will not be my next choices. Tread wear with mild driving seems a little excessive.

  3. My caravan is almost 3 years old now and still within warranty. I’ve got 27,xxx miles on these oe tires and I must say that I’m thoroughly disappointed in them. Ive rotated every 7-8k miles and still found wear excessive. I’m down to last 1/8 tread depth already. I don’t ride my vehicle hard and we have made several long distance trips on these tires. I will not be putting yokohamas back on my van.

    1. Do you have 27000 miles on the van or on the tires? Im pushing 20000 miles on my van, but only about 15000 are these tires as I switched in thr winter

  4. the avid s33 wears out so fast its just garbage this is going to stoop me from buying any product of
Yokohama ONLY 46000.00 KMS ON grand caravan now down to 3/32 this is total junk

    1. I agree….junk junk junk. I’ve stretched it out to 63k, but they look like the bald guy’s head from the three stupids lol
