Yokohama IceGuard IG52c Tire Review & Rating

The Yokohama IceGuard IG52c is new to Yokohama’s winter tire lineup for 2014. It’s a studless ice and snow model that is designed for use on coupes, sedans, minivans and crossovers that need the added traction for driving in severe winter conditions.

If you’re looking for an environmentally-friendly winter tire, the IG52c fills the bill. It has the BluEarth branding that designates it as being eco-friendly. Yokohama has created a triple action high-density tread compound that features higher amounts of silica, multi-layer carbon and resin-coated shelled micro-bubbles that help the tire perform well in all temperature ranges.

The tread itself looks somewhat similar to the X-ice Xi3 with its wider center rib and larger tread blocks that provide added handling and increased stability on dry, wet or snow covered streets. Triple 3-D sipes are used as well to enhance grip on wet and icy road surfaces.

Inside the tire you’ll find two steel belts with a polyester cord body for added strength and durability. Yokohama offers sizes ranging from 14-18 inches and the tire sports the mountain/snowflake symbol for severe weather performance. Yokohama highly recommends running the IG52c in sets of four only.

Pros

  • Traction and handling on cold dry pavement
  • Superior traction on snow and hard-packed snow
  • Grip on wet pavement
  • Excellent treadwear

Cons

  • Needs a bit more ice and slush traction

Overall Thoughts

In a nutshell, Yokohama has a very good winter tire in the IceGuard IG52c. The traction on cold, dry, wet and snow covered roads is excellent. It handles very well on all of these surfaces and provides a lot of confidence. Treadwear is another area where this tire excels. Finally, the price is a bit less than some of the other top name brand winter tires.

Where this tire slips in the rankings a bit is with its ice and slush performance. While it does ok for the most part, it just doesn’t have the extra grip that a couple of other top models have. If you do a lot of driving on hard-packed snow that has been around for what seems like weeks on end and has that icy covering on it, you know what we mean. You often need that extra boost in traction to get over it.

Overall, while we rank the Nokian WR-G2, Bridgestone Blizzak WS80 and Michelin X-ice Xi3 ahead of this model, this winter tire is definitely one of the better performers in its class despite a couple of its flaws.
