Yokohama Ice Guard IG20 Tire Review & Rating

The Ice Guard IG20 from Yokohama utilizes the latest winter tire technology to give you the best possible driving performance. Designed for drivers of sport coupes, luxury sedans and minivans, the IG20 delivers confidence when roads turn messy.

3-D sipes around the tread interlock to strengthen the treadblocks and increase the biting edges for maximum traction on snow and ice. Yokohama has developed micro-diagonal grooves that also provide immediate traction for when you are starting from a standing stop and need added traction.

Slush grooves enhance handling on slushy and wet roads. These grooves drain water from the inside of the tire to the outside, clearing the contact patch of water and reducing the risk of hydroplaning.

The ride on this tire is engineered to be more quiet through the use of extended center rib tread blocks. These blocks not only create a more quiet tread pattern, but they also support more crisp steering response and improved braking performance.

Inside the tire you’ll find two steel belts that are reinforced with spirally wrapped nylon for added strength and durability. They also promote more even treadwear, as does the groove-in-groove tread design, resulting in a longer overall treadlife. Yokohama has 14 – 19 inch sizes available that will fit a wide range of vehicles.

Overall Thoughts

These IG20 tires are very good performers. Traction on snow, ice, slush and other winter elements is outstanding. They are only a step below the top tires like the X-ice and Blizzaks, but the difference is not a lot. Ice handling is just a bit below the other leaders, which is why we say this. That said, this tire rides comfortably and without a lot of noise. Treadlife is excellent. Better yet is the price is below that on other brand names. Overall, expect to find excellent value and performance for the cost.
