Yokohama Geolandar M/T G003 Tire Review & Rating

The Yokohama Geolandar M/T G003, released in July 2017, is set to replace the older Geolandar M/T+. Designed for use on all types of pickups, SUV’s and 4×4’s, the MT G003 features improvements in traction, treadlife, ride comfort and more.

Yokohama uses a high-density triple-polymer tread compound to go with their Geo-Shield construction that consists of multiple sidewall plies, steel belts, a full nylon cap, and a high turn-up carcass for added protection.

Yokohama Geolandar M/T G003 Tire Review

Combined with a new aggressive sidewall armor, which increases sidewall protection against jagged rocks and other debris, this model not only looks good, but provides very good off-road traction as well.

An optimized block to void ratio and unique tread design give the G003 dependable grip in dirt, sand, mud and on rocks. Optimized sipes around the tread further aid in traction on both on or off-road terrain.

On the street, you’ll find the G003 is much quieter than you might expect from a mud-terrain tire. Yokohama uses a computer aided variable pitch tread sequence that dramatically reduces unwanted noise. This is a noticeable improvement over the older model, and one of the quieter MT tires in its class.

Treadlife has been enhanced through the triple-polymer compound, which Yokohama claims is 8% longer lasting than leading competitor tires. Currently, Yokohama offers a range of 16-20 inch sizes in both LT and flotation models, with additional sizes being released throughout the remainder of the year.

Pros

  • Excellent sidewall protection in rugged conditions
  • Very good off-road performance
  • On-road manners, especially noise, is among better tires in class
  • Much better treadlife than the older MT+

Cons

  • Not the best for serious rock climbers

Overall Thoughts

Yokohama was long overdue for a new MT tire in their lineup due in part to all the new technology that has come out over the past several years. To that end, this new MT G003 doesn’t disappoint. We like the new aggressive look on this tire and the unique sidewall armor certainly improves its puncture resistance.

Off-road you can expect more than adequate traction on dirt, sand, gravel, rocks and snow. While it may not be a tire for serious rock climbing, it does a good overall job in most situations.

For most drivers who spend a majority of their time on the street, the G003 is a big step-up from the previous model in all areas. From shorter stopping distances to a much quieter ride, this tire easily out performs its predecessor.

Overall, it’s hard not to come away impressed with this tire.
