Yokohama Avid S33B Tire Review & Rating

With most of its use as original equipment, the Yokohama Avid S33B is billed as being a tire designed for dependable year round traction to go with a smooth and comfortable ride. Vehicles like the Dodge Grand Caravan and several others utilize the Avid S33B, however, this model is also available as a replacement tire on coupes, sedans, vans and crossovers.

An all-season tread compound and symmetric tread pattern adds to dry traction and handling. Larger outer shoulder blocks enhance cornering grip and stability, which is a plus on this tire.

Yokohama Avid S33B Tire Review

Three circumferential grooves and angled lateral grooves increase traction on wet pavement and help in reducing the risk of hydroplaning by channeling away rain water. That said, wet grip is not up to the likes of other Yokohama models such as the Avid Ascend.

Although the Yokohama S33B is M+S rated, when it comes to driving on snow and ice, expect to find less than expected traction. Braking and acceleration in winter elements is a problem area that far too many drivers have complained about in reviews of this model.

Two steel belts and a polyester cord body add strength and durability, while also working to increase ride comfort. Yokohama offers a small number of 15-17 inch sizes, and all sizes have a limited tread warranty.

Pros

  • Dry traction is very good
  • Delivers reliable handling and stability
  • Smooth ride

Cons

  • Treadlife is poor
  • Road noise as tire wears
  • Winter performance is far below average

Overall Thoughts

After driving on the Yokohama S33B, you can’t help but walk away disappointed with its performance overall. Yes, this tire does some things quite well. Areas such as dry traction, cornering stability and ride comfort are not bad at all. Unfortunately, things go south from there. Road noise begins to become more noticeable as the tire starts wearing. Even after just 5K miles, the tire begins to get louder.

The biggest issue we have with this model would be the lower than expected treadlife. We’ve heard this from an overwhelming number of drivers as well. Some have reported getting only 25K miles from the tread, and that is with rotations and mild-mannered driving habits. I mean, we don’t know of too many families smoking the tires on their Dodge Grand Caravan at every stop light, so driving habits are unlikely to cause all the wear problems.

In addition, traction, braking and acceleration on any amount of snow and ice is poor when compared to other tires in this class. Again, this is also a major problem with others as well.

Overall, if you do not have to deal with winter driving conditions or you just need an around town only type of tire, the S33B may work for you. However, the problem areas on this tire simply cannot be overlooked and brushed aside. There are far better all-season tires available that we would recommend.
