Toyo R888R

Overview

The Toyo R888R racing radial tire has evolved from the Proxes R888, Toyo’s racetrack and autocross tire designed for high-speed and high-performance vehicles. This variant comes with improvements from the previous one in terms of handling and faster circuits.

In addition, the tire has a tread compound that is designed to reach operating temperatures in a flash and provides the ultimate driving control while cornering. The asymmetric tread consists of a mold with aggressive tread patterns combined with big outboard shoulder blocks to deliver the lateral grip required for driving on a track.

Furthermore, the casing of the R888R is reinforced by two broad, tensile steel belts while a spirally-wound ply lends it additional stability and resilience. The contact patch develops in a continual way to provide sublime dry traction, enhanced braking, cornering and acceleration compared to its predecessor.

Lastly, the wider outer tread blocks of this variant provide better overall dry grip and the specially designed channels help evacuate water, thus ensuring enhanced traction on slippery tracks.

Still, this model is not recommended for driving on wet surfaces when worn or shaved, as the tire’s hydroplaning resistance is significantly reduced and drivers can lose control of their vehicles.

This model is not intended to be driven in sub-zero conditions or on surfaces covered with ice and snow. Also, these need to be stored indoors while maintaining temperatures of 15 degrees F and above.

Toyo R888R comes with a speed rating of W (270 km/h), no tread life warranty and a limited uniformity and workmanship & materials warranty.

Overall Thoughts

With features like big outboard shoulders, less warmup time, sturdy internal construction, etc., the Toyo Proxes R888R is a formidable choice for track racing or drag racing.

Built to provide amazing grip on dry tarmac, the tread compound is designed to reach operating temperatures within seconds without the need to warm up. As a bonus, this model delivers exceptional driving control and cornering experience from the start.

The aggressive tread patterns enhance its lateral grip – combined with bigger shoulder blocks, it provides superior traction and control that is required to cut corners in high-speeds. Also, the contact patch development increases acceleration and dry grip while reducing stoppage time.

All things considered, the Toyo R888R is a more reliable variant compared to its predecessor with major improvements in lateral grip and traction. It is a great choice for driving on dry tracks when you need to cut fast corners with enhanced smoothness and responsiveness.

In spite of these great features, many users have reported that it gets a little noisy when driving on highways and does not deliver great wet handling.

Note: Although R88R meets D.O.T regulations, it is not advised to use these tires on wet surfaces after they have been worn out. Drivers should avoid water logged roads and reduce speed when they come across slippery conditions.
