Toyo Open Country ATII Tire Review & Rating

The Toyo Open Country ATII is not just another minor cosmetic update to their earlier popular version of this tire. It’s a serious upgrade for pickup, SUV and other vehicles that you don’t often find with updated models regardless of brand name.

To kick things off, Toyo has utilized a new tread compound, a new sipe design and added tie bars that reduce irregular wear in the AT2. The result is much better wear resistance than the original. In fact the company states that it provides over 40% more tread life, a statement that we believe to be true based upon our own observations and reviews from other drivers.

Toyo Open Country ATII Tire Review

On-road performance is a strong suit for the AT II. The stronger sidewalls and open tread block design provide added handling and cornering stability on both dry and wet pavement. The addition of the tie bars between the tread blocks not only help with wear, but increase stability and reduce braking distances on dry road surfaces.

Off-road performance is enhanced through the tire’s deeper tread grooves and stone ejecting blocks that combine to deliver improved traction in mud and snow. (We talk more about this later on in our overall thoughts.)

Toyo has a wide variety of sizes available with the Open Country AT II. You’ll find P-metric and LT models in load range C or E, as well as Toyo’s Xtreme sizes , or XT. These tires feature a deeper tread depth and a more aggressive tread and shoulder design. There’s also a 65,000 mile tread guarantee on P-metric sizes, and a 50,000 mile warranty on LT sizes included.

Pros

  • Excellent on-road dry and wet traction
  • Cornering stability
  • Ride comfort
  • Long lasting treadlife

Cons

  • A little more noise than other leading tires in its class
  • Mud and deep snow get packed easily

Overall Thoughts

While we liked the original Open Country, the newer AT II version is a real treat for the most part. It ranks right up there with the best all-terrain tires for its on-road performance. Traction is excellent whether the roads are dry or wet, and the ride is quite comfortable for an AT tire. In addition, this tire delivers excellent stability when cornering.

Off-road performance is about average compared to others in its class. It handles rock, sand, gravel, dirt and grass as good as you would expect from an AT tire, but deeper mud and snow is another story. Yes it sports deeper tread voids, but they seem to pack up too easily in our opinion. To be fair though, this is an issue for most every all-terrain tire.

Overall, if own a daily driver or need a competent tire for your tow rig, this Toyo model makes a solid choice and doesn’t disappoint.

  1. They came on my 120 prado. Hoenstly in wet weather front will slide out on corners or under brakes at slow speed even 40kmh. I personally would rate them as dangerous in the wet. So these positive wet sealed road reviews are surprising.

  2. i bought a used car from japan fitted with both toyo tyres and firestone to it… the tyre wasnt new it had been used for a while, but i been using it up to now… 2 years after… while the firestone failed on me

  3. Love this tire i been running it for the past 12 years . Does load up with snow but its not a snow tire the last set i had for 4 years now that says something im in my truck every day .
