Toyo M-55 Tire Review & Rating

The Toyo M-55 is designed as a commercial grade all-terrain tire for owners of all types of pickups and other 4×4 vehicles. Featuring a rugged tread design and tougher construction, the M55 is built to deliver higher performance in demanding off-road conditions, as well as an exceptional tread life.

Toyo uses a unique cut and chip resistant tread compound to go with a computer-optimized aggressive block and lug tread design that is made for severe service. The tread depth on this model is 17-19/32nds depending on tire size.

A 3-ply sidewall construction and reinforced casing (on most sizes) withstands jagged rocks and other debris when driving off-road, which is an area that is frequently mentioned as a plus in other driver reviews. It also increases the tire’s load carrying capacity.

The deeper tread depth and added sipes on the M55 give it more than capable wet traction on the highway and reduce the risk of hydroplaning. These biting edges provide increased snow and ice grip as well, which is another area where this tire excels. It should be noted that Toyo has pinned the M-55 to accept TSMI #15 studs for additional traction on icy surfaces if you require it.

Toyo offers a range of 15 to 18 inch LT sizes that feature either a C or E load range rating. A limited tread warranty is also included.

Pros

  • Excellent off-road traction
  • One of the better tires for daily gravel road driving
  • Snow and ice traction is among best in class
  • Tough, durable tread wears like iron

Cons

  • A little extra road noise
  • Rougher ride on highway when driving with an empty bed

Overall Thoughts

There is not a lot we can add in our thoughts on the Toyo M55 other than to say it is simply the toughest commercial grade all-terrain tire on the market today. The same has been said time after time by other owners of this tire as well.

Traction off-road is as good as it gets with this tire. We’ve heard from logging crews who use this tire every day and have never had a flat, let alone any issues with getting stuck on the hillsides. In addition, this tire tackles rough winter conditions with relative ease. Finally, expect to wear out your truck before you wear out these tires. They wear as well as any tire we’ve reviewed.

On the downside, if you really want to call it that, is the fact that this tire is a bit noisier than many in this class. It’s not unexpected though and not as loud as a mud-terrain model. Ride comfort, especially when driving with an empty bed, is a little rougher due in part to the tougher tread makeup and stiffer sidewall design.

Overall, the M-55 is ideal for fleet owners who are tired of continually having to replace their tires due to failures or need the highest levels of traction in rugged terrain. It’s also a solid option for those living in rural areas who drive gravel roads on a daily basis, or for any truck owner who just wants a rugged, well-built AT tire that will wear like iron.

  1. 40,000+ miles so far on my RAM3500 with permanently mounted camper. Looks like I’ll get another 10-20k. Some light trailer towing, some pretty gnarly sharp rock crawling, lots of gravel, lots of pavement. Sorta loud, but I’m sorta deaf anyway. The truck rides like a truck – no surprise there. We had our longest, coldest winter on record last year and the M-55s were outstanding in snow and above average on ice. Hard to judge “wet pavement” because that varies depending on the surface condition, how long it’s been raining, etc., but they haven’t surprised me. No one in South Dakota stocks them, and they are expensive, but having tried many other “off-road” and “all-terrain” tires, I’ll buy them again.

  2. Ruff riding best truck tire been using them for years if you have a pavement princess truck this isnt your tire if you haul heavy loads drive rockey roads with a camper or tow a trailer you will love them extremely stable in cross winds good traction really stand up to the worst roads carrying heavy loads with out getting holes punched in them their is a reason the m55 is about the only tire you will find on forest service and loggers pickups in our area
