Continental ExtremeWinterContact Tire Review & Rating

The ExtremeWinterContact from Continental is built to deliver outstanding traction in all types of cold and rough winter weather conditions. Designed for drivers of coupes, sedans, crossovers, minivans and even SUV’s and pickups, this studless winter tire features serious performance while also providing a more comfortable ride quality.

A high-tech winter tread compound is engineered to be more flexible when temperatures dip below freezing, which results in increased traction on snow and ice. Dry traction and cornering are enhanced through the tire’s elevated lateral grooves and compact shoulders, while wet surface handling and hydroplane resistance are increased through inclined grooves that channel away water from under the tread.

ExtremeWinterContact from Continental Tires

While this tire provides excellent dry and wet handling, it’s the snow and ice performance that puts it among the best tires in this class. Expect excellent starting and stopping abilities due to independent tread blocks that use high-density sipes with multiple biting edges that are designed to dig into snow and ice for maximum grip. The asymmetric tread pattern features a center contact patch with traction ridges in the grooves that further add to the tire’s snow traction, whether it be light or deep snow.

Another unique feature with the Extreme Winter Contact is a winter tread depth indicator. As the tire wears down to 50% tread depth, this molded indicator lets you know you are beginning to reach the limits of snow traction. It’s just a quick way to know where you are in terms of tread depth and remaining performance.

Inside the tire you will find two steel belts with spirally wrapped nylon for added strength and durability. A polyester cord body provides extra ride comfort, which is very good on this model. Continental offers 15-17 inch sizes on this tire.

Pros

  • Excellent all-around snow and ice performance
  • Among best in class light and deep snow traction
  • Outstanding dry and wet traction
  • Comfortable and quiet riding tire

Cons

  • Would like to see just a bit more treadlife

Overall Thoughts

These ExtremeWinterContact tires deliver some of the best winter driving performance of any tire on the market today. They rank right up there with the Blizzaks, X-ice and other top models. Starting and stopping on snow and ice is about like driving on normal dry pavement. The tires simply take you where you want to go. Cornering traction on snow, slush, ice and hard packed snow is outstanding.

We have even heard drivers mentioning they have run these tires year round and love the traction and grip they get on dry and wet pavement. They provide good steering response and remain stable throughout the speed zone. Expect a comfortable and quiet ride on this tire. Road noise is minimal and much lower than you might expect for a snow tire.

Treadlife is good, however we would like to see just a bit more out of them. To be fair, this is only the case with more spirited drivers and those who drive on them year round. Overall, this Continental winter tire ranks among the top models in this class and is highly recommended.
