Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armor Tire Review & Rating

The Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armor is the company’s high performance on-road, off-road AT tire. Using DuPont Kevlar, the Silent Armor is designed to provide traction in tough terrains for drivers of all types of pickups, SUV’s, vans and jeeps.

A silica enhanced Durawall 5 tread compound and added Kevlar are created to provide enhanced protection against punctures and cuts, while the symmetric tread pattern increases traction on dry, wet or snow covered road surfaces. This tire is molded with the Mountain/Snowflake emblem which signifies that it meets the severe snow service requirements, the same emblem you find on dedicated winter tires.

As noted above, the Silent Armor is built with a Kevlar layer for added strength, but another benefit is that it also promotes a more quiet and smoother ride by absorbing vibrations and noise. Off-road performance is increased through Goodyear’s traction ridges around the tread that provide bite in gravel, mud, wet or snowy conditions, which is a real plus for this tire.

Inside the tire you will find what Goodyear calls their Armor Zone. It contains two high-tensile steel belts with a Kevlar cord to provide added strength and durability to the tire. A rim guard helps in protecting your custom wheels from damage by curbs or off-road obstructions. Goodyear stands behind this tire with a 50,000 mile tread guarantee.

Pros

  • Outstanding dry, wet and light terrain off-road traction and handling
  • Excellent on snow and ice
  • Very good ride comfort and low road noise
  • Tread life is above average in this class

Cons

  • Deeper mud performance could be improved
  • Tires are heavy and may be harder to balance

Overall Thoughts

The Wrangler Silent Armor has been out for a few years now and continues to be one of the more popular Goodyear all-terrain tires for a good reason… because of its exceptional performance. Whether it is off-road on various terrains, around town or on the highway, or in deep snow and ice, this tire performs with the best of them.

The only area we find it lacking in would be mud traction, but even then we’ve seen much worse tires that were supposed to be M/T tires. One other note is that we’ve heard a few drivers mention that because this tire is a bit heavier than other AT tires, it can be tougher to get them balanced out correctly.

This model rides comfortably for an A/T tire, and road noise is minimal. Treadlife is good, with only a few drivers complaining about it in reviews. This is also one tough tire in resisting damage from sharp rocks or logs.

Overall, the Silent Armor is one rugged all-terrain tire that has consistently ranked among the better tires in its class for several years running.

  1. I’ve had a set of these (LT265/65R20) on a 2014 Ram 1500 4×4 for about 30,000 miles.
While the performance is good, the rolling resistance is horrible.
My fuel milage went WAY down with these.
The tread wear is good, but I am almost wishing they would wear out so I have a good excuse to replace them with something that puts the fuel economy back where it should be.

Notice I went with the 10 ply rated LT version which is a much heavier tire. I did this due to towing a travel trailer off road in the desert areas of Arizona and wanted something tougher to handle the rocks better. (Don’t really want to get a rock puncture 15 miles off the highway while pulling a trailer)

The bottom line is: If you don’t mind the fuel prices, these perform VERY well in snow, mud, rain, & off-road conditions.
