Sumitomo HTR A/S P02 Tire Review & Rating

The Sumitomo HTR A/S P02 high performance all-season tire is aimed at drivers of sport coupes and higher performance sedans who are looking to get more out of their tires. Sumitomo has attempted to provide excellent traction and handling response in wet and dry driving conditions, as well as reliable traction in light snow and ice.

A silica all-season tread compound helps in providing added grip on wet and light snow covered road surfaces. The asymmetric tread pattern includes wider shoulder blocks with notches to enhance cornering and stability on dry pavement.

Sumitomo HTR AS PO2 Tire Review

The tire’s center rib and deeper circumferential grooves combine with lateral grooves to further enhance traction on wet roads and to decrease the likelihood of hydroplaning. The Sumitomo P02 also adds 3-D sipes to the tread that deliver biting edges for traction in light snow, slush, and ice.

Internally, the HTR A/S P02 has a set of dual steel belts which Sumitomo engineers have reinforced with jointless nylon bands. These are wound in a spiral pattern to enhance performance at high speeds and provide drivers with additional ride comfort. Handling is further improved by a high-tensile polyester casing.

The HTR A/S P02 is available in a massive number of sizes that range from 15-20 inches, and come with speed ratings of H, V or W. Sumitomo has also included up to a 65K mile tread wear warranty depending on the speed rating.

Pros

  • Decent cornering grip
  • Reliable traction in wet and dry driving conditions
  • Quiet and comfortable ride
  • Lower price

Cons

  • Less than desirable snow traction

Overall Thoughts

If you drive a high performance “sporty” vehicle, you’ll likely be looking for a tire that matches those needs. With plenty of high-performance all-season tires in the marketplace, Sumitomo’s HTRA/S P02 holds its own, and is especially a smart buy for the value-conscious.

It is reasonably priced, available in a wide range of sizes, and can offer you a desirable feature set such as a quiet and comfortable ride, good handling in wet and dry conditions, and a good-to-great tread life expectancy.

However, what the HTR A/S P02 doesn’t do so well is a common flaw in many “all-season” tires and that is its traction in snow. It leaves much to be desired. If your typical usage scenario doesn’t involve more than light snow and little to no ice on the roads, the HTR A/S P02 is a reliable tire for your high-performance passenger vehicle.

Although arguably not up to the performance level of tires such as the BFG Comp-2 A/S, Continental DWS06, Pirelli P Zero AS Plus among others, we like this tire and feel it is much improved over the original P01. We give it a rank in the middle of the class.

  1. Probably the best tires I have ever owned. I had them installed in late 2019 on my 2011 Dodge Charger RWD. I put roughly 70k miles on them since then. Zero puncture. Still there are lots of treads, but I am seeing side wall cracks. Probably I will replace them very soon, and definitely with another set of same tires.

  2. these tires only lasted me 15,000 miles with frequent rotations and a alignment check. Plus the winter traction and road noise is not good at all.

  3. Purchase 4 HTR AS PO2 235 45 17w rated tires for 2005 Acura TL …… total price out the door $419.58 ……. at this price if they last 25k i will buy another set …… I had Michelin AS 3….. only got 32k out of them first $808.00 ……. these new tires meets or exceeds Michelin …… they are quiet…… and oh yea …… the Sumitomo Warranty …….. can’t beat it …….

  4. Just got A set of these tires to day for a Volkswagen passat. Awesome black Friday deal at NTB.
    Buy 2 get 2 free. I paid 157.99 for 4 tires.
Of course I’m getting all the extras, road hazard and Alignment, spin Balancing, etc…so it will cost about $550. I hope.im happy with them… Time will tell

  5. Bought a set through Tire Rack; have had 4 punctures (one required replacement) in less than 5000 miles. These tires measure over 9/32 at this point. I just had a puncture with 18 miles on the replacement tire….been driving for 45 years, 15000+ miles per year, and have only had 2 other flats. Bad luck or…..

  6. I have 08 C300 4matic. I have had these tires on my car since 2014@70k. I am now replacing them at 130k. I live in Rhode Island and drive up hills in the snow with no problems. These tires have been awesome on my car. The only thing I did different was remove the bigger wheels and tires from the back and went 225/45/17 all around so I can rotate them

  7. 2009 VW Jetta running a pair of these tires in the front.

Got them back in 3/2016 and it’s 4/2019. 3 years later, numerous trips on i-95 to my local ski resort on i-70 along with a couple trips to Summit Point Track WV as a spectator and these tires seem to have good wear on them. No loud noises have yet to surface.

Happy with the set that I have.

  8. I bought a set for my mustang gt I’m very pleased with these tires rides and handles great I will buy another set

  9. Got 4 for Lexus ES350 from NTB…, extreme quiet and road response., made sedan feel like ultra sports car,..whisper quiet but stick to the asphalt like glue! I’m in love with my car all over again.
