Sumitomo HTR Sport H/P Tire Review & Rating

The HTR Sport H/P from Sumitomo is the company’s sport pickup and SUV tire that is built to deliver high performance traction and cornering, as well as all-season drivability. With plus size availability, the HTR carries an attractive tread design and a longer tread life.

An all-season tread compound and symmetric tread pattern combine with the tire’s continuous center rib for increased stability and steering response. The two-in-one shoulder block design provide enhanced cornering grip on dry or wet pavement.

Four wide circumferential grooves and a secondary rib block design deliver maximum grip on wet road surfaces, while also channeling away water from under the tread. The result is a lower risk of hydroplaning and better overall stability in bad weather. Added sipes to the tread blocks further enhance traction in light snow.

Sumitomo HTR Sport H/P Tire Review

Inside the tire you will find two steel belts that use Sumitomo’s Jointless Nylon Band technology for increased strength and durability throughout the speed range. A polyester cord body adds to the ride comfort and more even treadwear. This tire also features a reversible sidewall design. One side is smooth and shiny in appearance, while the other side sports a more aggressive serrated look. This model is available in sizes that range from 18-24 inches.

Pros

  • Outstanding dry pavement traction and cornering grip
  • Wet and snow handling are very good
  • Tires are responsive
  • Ride is comfortable
  • Excellent treadlife

Cons

  • Winter handling performance could be better

Overall Thoughts

The HTR provides excellent performance on dry road surfaces. Acceleration, braking and cornering are all very good on this tire. We would say this tire sits just below the likes of the Yokohama Parada SpecX or Goodyear Fortera SL. We give this tire mixed reviews when it comes to driving in winter weather conditions. Although adequate in light snow, grip in deep snow or on ice is not the best. To be fair this is not a snow tire or M/T tire either.

You can expect a comfortable ride with a little road noise, but nothing too excessive. We’ve heard some drivers mention noise, while others have said the tire is quiet. Treadlife is another plus on this model. Overall, we rank the HTR Sport in the upper half of the all-season street class. It makes a good choice for truck/SUV owners.
