Road Hugger GT Eco Tire Review & Rating

Built with sporty handling and dependable traction in mind, the Road Hugger GT Eco also features a comfortable ride and an eco-friendly tread design for drivers of all types of coupes and sedans who are looking for a value priced all season tire.

A special tread compound lowers rolling resistance for increased fuel efficiency, while also lowering CO2 emissions and being more environmentally friendly. The five rib pattern utilizes interlocking tread blocks that work to enhance handling and stability throughout the speed range. Further, the tire incorporates an apex filler that extends up into the sidewall for additional handling and cornering performance.

Road Hugger GT Eco Tire Review

The tire’s four large circumferential grooves and crossover grooves increase traction on wet road surfaces and reduce the risk of hydroplaning. Full-depth sipes around the tread add biting edges for some extra grip in light snow and other winter conditions.

Inside the tire you’ll find two steel belted construction and a polyester cord body for added strength and durability, as well as improved ride comfort. Sizes are available from 15-17 inches, and a 60,000 mile tread warranty is also provided.

Pros

  • Dry and wet traction
  • Cornering grip
  • Comfortable ride
  • Budget-friendly cost

Cons

  • Winter handling

Overall Thoughts

With a tread design similar to the Kumho KH30, we found the Road Hugger GT Eco delivers some pretty good overall performance. Grip and handling on dry pavement feels confident and like that which you would find on more expensive all-season tires. The ride is comfortable, and while there is a little road noise we don’t find it to be anything too excessive.

Winter handling is not a strong point for this model, although you can say that for most any all-season tire. It holds its own in light snow, but don’t expect too much when conditions get worse.

Overall, with its low price and decent performance this is not a bad choice in new tires.

  1. We were traveling and ended up suddenly needing 2 tires on a recently purchased car. Discount Tire was the easiest to get to national chain so I bought from them without having the luxury of research. The jury is still out on the tires but I’m aggravated that the person at Discount pushed them and I bought without realizing that they aren’t name brand AND there is not much info online.

I generally only care about the performance and not about brand for sake of the name. Perhaps this review is only a warning to be aware that the service person will sell what is in the best interest of the store and NEVER walk in without having done your research.

    1. Hi Bob
That’s quite the horror story. A salesperson is always looking to close the deal and their advice will often be towards the detriment of the buyer interested in getting the perfect tire for their vehicle. On our website you can find extensive, highly-detailed reviews that speak about the technical aspect as well as the performance benefit each tire offers the hopeful buyer. We would urge you to make use of the information we provide our readers, and before you purchase your next pair either engage with us through the comments section or read through a few reviews or vehicle specific Top 10’s list.

  2. I bought a set of the road hugger gt eco tires. The tires I purchased have a 4 rib design not 5. Wet weather handling terrible compared to the Bridgestone ecopia 422 plus tires that was on the car prior to the kuhmo. 3 months the kuhmo tires are about wore out. I do a lot of highway driving. Dot date on the kuhmo tires 3rd week of 2018. Will not ever purchase again

  3. Thanks for the positive “snow” comments. As we speak, a set of 4 are replacing the original set of Firestone’s the car came with (2014 Cruze). I didnt anticipate having this tire put on, but circumstances left me no choice. When I read the report above, I rolled my eyes on the “cons: winter driving” comment, but glad others have challenged this with real experiences…so that you! I too live in Michigan, so it will refreshing to have a better experience this Winter.

  4. I live in Michigan and we have had a brutal winter with ice snow and rain. These tires handled BEAUTIFLY in all conditions. I was very skeptical of buying these because of the review I had read about handling in snow, but not true at all!! I am very happy about my decision to buy these. A wonderful tire handles extremely well on all wet dry ice snow pavement. I have a 2014 Ford Focus.

  5. I only have 2000 miles on new set of Road Hugger GT Eco tires but wanted to review winter handling. I drove trough 3 inches of new snow one day and 2 inches of freezing rain slush the next day and these tires performed amazingly well. Held the road well, no slipping or sliding and passed some 4 wheel drives on the highway. Got stopped on a hill and had no problem taking off on green light in freezing conditions. These tires perform as well as or better than more expensive all season tires.
