Pirelli Winter Sottozero Serie II Tire Review & Rating

The Winter Sottozero Serie II from Pirelli is the company’s 2nd generation model of this popular winter tire. Built for drivers of sport coupes, sedans and crossovers, the Serie II is designed to provide not only excellent winter traction, but also high performance in all-season weather and road conditions.

Pirelli uses an exclusive tread compound that features new high tech polymers and a mixing process that makes the tire more environmentally friendly, while their unique Temperature Dynamic Compound technology adds increased traction on snow, ice, slush and other conditions. This new technology is designed to optimize the tread compound and provide more flexibility for increased traction when temps go below freezing. It does this very well.

Dry pavement grip and cornering performance are increased through the tire’s larger shoulder blocks and Interactive Brickwork Siping. Many drivers have also commented on how this tire grips the road as well as many summer high performance tires. The sipes are made to create a brickwork like pattern that adds to cornering stability and enhanced steering response.

These same brickwork sipes provide biting edges that dig into the snow and ice to provide outstanding traction and handling, which is an area that this tire does quite well. Circumferential grooves channel away water and slush from under the tire to further increase wet performance and reduce the risk of hydroplaning.

Inside the tire you will find two steel belts with a polyamide reinforcement that provide added strength and durability, as well as increased stability. A polyester cord body gives this tire a smoother and more comfortable ride. Pirelli has an endless number of sizes available in the Serie II tires from 16-20 inches. It also comes in an H, V or W-speed rating depending on model chosen.

Overall Thoughts

The original Sottozero winter tires are one of the better models available, but this new Serie II is arguably even better in some areas. Traction and grip on the snow and ice will not disappoint you. They drive on light snow like it’s a warm summer day. About the only place the two models are different is in deep, heavy snow. The originals provide just a bit more traction in our opinion.

Driving on wet or dry pavement is another area that this tire shines. The cornering grip and steering response is nearly as good as high performance summer tires. The tire hugs the pavement and doesn’t slide out on you.

Ride comfort is excellent on this tire. It’s smooth and road noise is not excessive. That said, you may notice some extra noise on dry pavement at higher speeds. Treadlife is outstanding on this model. Overall, Pirelli has created an exceptional performing winter tire that is among the best in its class. Highly recommended.

Warranty

Pirelli provides a limited tread warranty on the Serie II. Tire uniformity is guaranteed for one-year or the first 2/32 inch of wear. Materials and workmanship are warranted for an unlimited time and include free replacement during the first year or first 2/32 inch of wear. A prorated amount is given for the remaining time period or down to the last 2/32 inch of tread depth.
