Pirelli Scorpion Winter Tire Review & Rating

The Pirelli Scorpion Winter is a high end winter tire for sport pickups, crossovers and SUV’s. It excels at providing drivers with an exceptional degree of handling control in the harshest winter weather. The design of this tire allows it to provide improved braking and cornering performance over snow, ice and slush.

For the environmentally conscious driver, the tire sports Pirelli’s Eco-impact icons, which indicate that the tire’s build has met a number of environmental goals. The tire is also branded with the Mountain Snowflake emblem, indicating it meets industry standards for severe snow service.

Pirelli Scorpion Winter Tire Review

The Scorpion Winter’s tread compound is comprised of a polymer blend and higher amounts of silica, the latter of which in particular enables the tire to remain flexible in low temperatures and improves grip on wet roads.

Similar to many high quality winter tires, the tread pattern is directional with a round profile and sturdy shoulders for dry weather grip and cornering. But Pirelli has designed this winter tire with unique snow booster ridges, which are found on the bottom of the tire’s grooves for added bite in snow and ice.

As part of meeting Pirelli’s Eco-impact goals, noise levels have been reduced on this model, with surprisingly low in-vehicle sound levels. Ride comfort is also smooth as you might expect from Pirelli. The Scorpion Winter is available in many sizes ranging from 215/70R16 to 275/40R22 with an H or V speed rating. Pirelli provides a limited tread warranty as well.

Pros

  • Noise levels and ride comfort are excellent for a winter tire
  • Environmentally friendly design elements
  • In-snow acceleration is quite good

Cons

  • Traction, handling, and braking could be better in the snow
  • Tread wear may be uneven

Overall Thoughts

Owners of luxury crossovers or sport utility vehicles seeking a high end winter tire will likely be pleased with the Scorpion Winter, but perhaps not ecstatic. While the tire has many admirable features and a strong build quality despite its environmentally friendly aspirations, traction in snow and icy conditions could be improved upon. Braking and cornering also appear to be less than ideal.

The Scorpion Winter series handles well in dry weather and on wet roads, but for most drivers, a bona fide winter tire needs to provide that extra grip and bite on snow and ice. If you drive in an area with cold temperatures where snow falls regularly and turns into ice on the road, Pirelli’s Scorpion Winter tire is likely not going to be an ideal choice compared to similarly priced crossover or SUV winter tire offerings.
