Ohtsu ST5000 Tire Review & Rating

Built for all-season highway performance, the Ohtsu ST5000 is specifically designed for drivers of crossovers and SUV’s. As a sibling to Falken Tires, the Ohtsu lineup is ideally suited for those who are looking to save a lot of money on a set of new tires without severely compromising on traction and handling.

The ST5000 sports an M+S rated all-season tread compound with a symmetrical tread pattern. It’s non-directional which makes it easy to rotate your tires and is designed for a longer treadlife.

A continuous center rib delivers increased lateral handling and stability, while high-angled lateral grooves and offset tread blocks add to overall traction on both dry and wet pavement. Overall handling and cornering grip is pretty good on this tire.

Ohtsu has added four circumferential grooves around the tire to help in reducing the risk of hydroplaning and providing better wet grip. Added sipes are meant to increase wet traction, as well as winter grip, but this is a tire that struggles on snow and ice.

An optimized tread block pattern aids in reducing road noise and enhancing tread wear. A joint-less nylon cap ply adds strength and durability throughout the speed range, as well as lengthening tread life. The ST5000 carries a 500 UTQG rating, and this model is available in a range of 15-26 inch sizes.

Overall Thoughts

Although we would recommend other models such as the Yokohama YK-HTX and Michelin Defender LTX M/S among others as top choices for highway all-season performance on your pickup, crossover or SUV, this model is not bad at all. It also has the benefit of fitting the budget of those who are seeking to save the most money they can on a set of new tires.

Traction and handling are solid overall on dry or wet roads, and the ride may surprise you with the comfort level it provides. On the other hand, do not expect much in the way of winter traction with the ST5000. We’ve heard many drivers say the same things as well. But if you are someone who does not have to deal with a lot of severe winter weather on an extended basis, you’ll find this tire performs quite well for a lower costing model.

Overall, while arguably not the best in class, for an entry-level budget all-season tire the ST5000 delivers good value for the money.
