Nokian Hakkapeliitta R2 SUV Tire Review & Rating

The Nokian Hakkapeliitta R2 SUV tire is a non-studded advanced winter tire especially designed with SUV, crossover and light duty pickup truck use in mind. It features small particles within its strong rubber compound, which have been created to deliver increased traction and grip on ice and snow. These particles are diamond rough and act just like tiny studs. Compared to its predecessor, this new advanced model stops quicker when driving in speeds of up to 70 mph on slippery ice.

Being a winter tire, it is largely designed to offer excellent traction in wet and icy conditions. On the outer edges of the tire within the tread blocks, you’ll find small pocket sized pump sipes, which are responsible for ensuring the tire maintains good contact with the road’s surface.

In the earlier model, these pump sipes were added to the shoulder area of the tire, but in this new and improved version their volumes have been increased. They work by pumping water off the roads surface, creating better contact and control at all speeds.

Driving in snow and slushy conditions is made easier thanks to the self-cleaning capacity of the tire’s grooved surface. Accelerating and braking is also made safer by what Nokian calls “gripclaws”, which are inserted in-between the tread blocks. It is these grip claws that also contribute towards the shorter braking distances on ice.

The tire isn’t just built to handle wet and slushy conditions; it is also built to perform well on dry pavement too. As other tire owners have mentioned, handling on dry, cold pavement is excellent on this tire.

Comfort is another area that you’ll find is better than average, no matter what winter driving conditions you are travelling in. Nokian has also installed Winter Safety Indicators in the tread that let you know at a glance if the tread is still sufficient to safely drive in winter conditions, or if it is time to replace them. Sizes available range from 15-21 inches, and all of them feature an R speed rating. A run-flat version is available in select sizes as well.
