Nexen Nfera RU5 Tire Review & Rating

The Nexen Nfera RU5 tire is built to deliver ultra-high performance all-season traction and handling for drivers of light trucks and sporty SUVs. With an aim toward providing year-round drivability, this tire has a number of design features that have been created for increased performance in dry, wet, or winter weather road conditions, at a lower budget-friendly price.

An all-season tread compound combines with a tread pattern that features wavy and straight lateral grooves, as well as four circumferential grooves to cut through water and improve hydroplaning resistance. Micro-grooves are designed to help in improving performance in snow, slush, and ice. More on that below in our overall thoughts on this tire.

Reinforced center block stiffness is added to enhance handling and steering response for spirited driving at higher speeds, while a secondary outer rib increases stiffness further for increased cornering grip.

The Nexen RU5 is available in sizes ranging from 16-20 inches, and come with either a V or W-speed rating. There is also up to a 65K mile tread warranty included on this tire as well.

Pros

  • Dry traction and handling
  • Reasonably priced

Cons

  • Bump up wet grip
  • Rapid tread wear
  • Winter performance is nearly non-existent

Overall Thoughts

As a tire designed exclusively for high performance SUV’s and pickups, we expected to see better results than we have. Yes, this tire offers good dry traction and handling, and comes in at a lower price than many in this class. But that’s about it.

The RU5 could use a big bump in grip on wet road surfaces. Beyond that, although this is an all-season UHP model, traction on snow and ice is abysmal. Anything more than a dusting of snow could be problematic. In addition, tread life is another area of concern as evidenced by reviews from other drivers.

Overall, if your typical driving scenario involves a high-speed commute during non-severe weather conditions-that is to say, dry roads-this tire isn’t a bad choice if you are on a tight budget and can’t afford better performing tires. If you’re able to raise your budget, you can find a number of models that make for better tires.

  1. You guys are nuts on the CONS. 44,000 miles, two separate burnouts and two drifting sessions, driving in bad snow and ice with a Mustang and these have been my favorite tires of all time in snow, rain, dry, racing, and basically everything. Far better than Nitto’s and others. Try the tires before reviewing them
