Nankang SP-9 Cross Sport Tire Review & Rating

Specially designed for today’s crossovers, smaller SUV’s and larger family sedans, the Nankang SP-9 Cross Sport is the company’s newest touring all-season tire for 2015-2016. It’s built to deliver increased traction, a higher level of comfort and longer lasting treadlife.

An all-season tread compound and asymmetric tread pattern features larger outer shoulder blocks with angled grooves for added lateral grip in dry road conditions. These tread blocks do their job well for the most part. Handling and steering response are more than adequate at highway speeds.

Nankang SP-9 Cross Sport Tire Review

Nankang uses an optimized sipe design around the tread on the SP-9 to go with four wide circumferential grooves for driving on wet pavement. The sipes definitely help with traction, and the wider grooves effectively channel out the water and reduce the risk of hydroplaning.

Inside the tire are twin steel belts that give this tire added strength and stability while also improving durability. The Cross Sport has a 560 UTQG rating to go with a 50K mile tread warranty. Sizes range from 14-20 inches and come with either an H, V, W or Y-speed rating.

Pros

  • Efficient dry and wet traction
  • Smooth ride on most road surfaces
  • Treadlife
  • Lower cost

Cons

  • Winter handling

Overall Thoughts

Nankang’s newest tire is also one of their better models. The SP-9 delivers confident traction and handling in both dry and wet conditions. While you won’t mistake its wet or snow performance for that of models like the Michelin Premier LTX or General HTS60 among others, it does a competent job for most everyday driving needs.

You can expect a smooth and comfortable ride from this tire on all but the worst road surfaces. Treadlife looks to be good, and it does come backed with a 50,000 mile warranty.

Overall if you’re looking for a daily driving tire that is also budget-friendly, the Nankang Cross Sport is a good option. We feel it is one of the better value-priced all season tires in its class.

  1. I bought a set for my ford territory in Australia and in the wet they would have to be the most dangerous tyre I’ve ever fitted to any car and I have driven many 100s of thousands of Kim’s.
Looking at the tread design they look like they should be reasonable but never buy again.
    This is my experience.

  2. I have had great success so far with these tires on my 2007 Acura MDX. After the first 8k miles they are wearing evenly and ride smooth and quiet on the highway. Of course I had my alignment checked when these tires were installed which some people fail to do and this can help a lot in getting positive results with any set of new tires. These tires also maintain their pressure as well as any Michelin tire that I have owned. I would definitely use them again especially for the price.

  3. I purchased new set of (4) 235/60/R16’s for 2008 Crown Victoria in Dec-2019. When new they felt fine in regard to balance but as time went on and as mileage increased they continue to feel out of balance almost like a belt has slipped or they are oblong? They also have a lot of road noise. I received a great price on these but will never buy them again.

  4. Brought a set for my GLE 400 tires are good handling good in wet weather I have put about 5000 miles on them with no issues with wear.

  5. I like this tire alot except for the treadwear. Mine have a wear rating of 560 and after 6000 mi, 7 months, and my first rotation, the fronts were at 5/23 and the rear at 8/32. I suspect I will be taking advantage of the wear warranty.
