Michelin XPS Rib Tire Review & Rating

The XPS Rib from Michelin is engineered to deliver exceptional dry/wet traction and handling, while providing the capacity to more easily haul heavier loads. Designed for drivers of medium or heavy-duty trucks and vans, the XPS is also built to be more comfortable and quiet on the road.

A tough tread compound , steel casing and a steel reinforced bead, create a tire that is built to tackle whatever is thrown its way in terms of heavy loads. The tread design increases traction and cornering stability on dry or wet road surfaces. It also gives this tire enhanced steering response and feel.

Michelin XPS Rib Tire Review

While this model is also used as original equipment on some of today’s heavy-duty trucks and vans, it is becoming popular as a replacement tire as well. Much of this is due in part to how long a tread life this tire provides. The optimized tread design and the tire’s three steel belts not only promote more even tread wear, but it delivers added strength and puncture resistance.

This model also has a lower rolling resistance due to the tread compound, which results in better fuel efficiency. The XPS Rib includes a black serrated outline sidewall lettering that enhances the overall look of the tire. The tire carries a load rating of E, and is available in 16 inch sizes.

Pros

  • Excellent dry and wet traction
  • Cornering stability is very good
  • Ride is comfortable and road noise is nearly non-existent
  • Exceptional tread wear

Cons

  • Winter traction and handling

Overall Thoughts

It seems that many drivers have not heard much about the XPS Rib, but once they find out what it will do for their truck they are hooked. The performance in virtually every area of this tire is excellent. It stands up to hauling heavy loads with amazing traction and stability on either dry or wet roads. Steering is crisp and very responsive with or without a heavy load.

One area that took us by surprise was in how quiet this tire is. You would never expect it to be that quiet, but Michelin has optimized the tread design to lower the noise, and it works. Beyond that, the treadlife you’ll find is equally impressive. We’ve heard drivers getting 90,000 miles and more out of the tread. The only area that this tire is not designed to do is go through snow and ice. But even there, if you have 4WD it will still do the job in most cases.

Overall, if you need a tire that will provide top quality performance, haul heavy loads and still provide a quiet and more comfortable ride, then this is one of the best summer tires you will find. Highly recommended.

  1. I am very let down by the fact that Mechelen has discontinued the xps traction tires as I want to buy ribs for the front and xps traction tires for the rear of my 2wheel drive dually. I am going to purchase 6 ribs and carry ice chains Incase I get into a place where I need the traction. I’m very upset that I can’t find 4 xps traction tires for my truck.
