Michelin Pilot Alpin PA2 Tire Review & Rating

The Pilot Alpin PA2 from Michelin is built to provide outstanding traction and stability on snow, ice and other winter weather conditions. The PA2 features some of the latest in winter tire technology that delivers a higher level of performance for drivers of all types of sport coupes, luxury sedans and minivans.

A more flexible tread compound and symmetric tread design provide enhanced grip on snow and ice below freezing temperatures. The tire’s tread pattern and lateral grooves are also designed to increase handling on both wet or dry surfaces, which is an area that this tire performs very well in.

Michelin’s Bi-Directional Sipes System technology is what gives this tire a higher level of performance on wet, snow, slush and ice covered road surfaces. The sipes provide the biting edges to grip the elements and keep you going where you need to be.

Inside the tire you will find two steel belts that utilize the Banded At Zero technology found in other Michelin tires. The nylon cord used to strengthen the belts is banded at zero degrees to the direction of travel, which provides maximum strength and stability. You’ll find 17-18 inch sizes available on this model to go with an H or V-speed rating.

Pros

  • Exceptional snow and ice traction
  • Dry and wet surface grip is like a high performance summer tire
  • Steering response and tire stability is outstanding
  • Ride is quiet, comfortable and smooth
  • Long lasting treadlife

Cons

  • Tires are not cheap

Overall Thoughts

Once again, Michelin has another high quality winter tire in its lineup. The AlpinPA 2 provides excellent traction on the snow and ice. Whether it is a light dusting or an 8 inch storm, these tires grip the road like riding on rails and inspire a lot of confidence. Dry or wet surface handling is equally as impressive, and the tire provides a high level of stability throughout the speed range.

As with most of their tires, the ride quality is outstanding. The only thing you may notice is a little extra road noise as the tire wears down. Treadlife is long lasting, and we have heard drivers getting 50,000 miles and more out of this model. Michelin includes a 30,000 mile warranty, which is rare for a snow tire.

Overall, while not cheap by any means, the PA2 does provide high performance winter traction that you can count on, and is one of the better tires in this class.
