Mastercraft Glacier Grip II Tire Review & Rating

Built for use on all types of coupes, sedans, minivans and crossovers, the Mastercraft Glacier Grip II studdable winter tire is designed to provide solid performance in all types of winter road conditions.

Mastercraft combines a softer winter tread compound with a unique tread pattern that is created to give this tire dependable grip on snow and ice, while also maintaining a comfortable ride quality. The Glacier Grip II sports the mountain/snowflake emblem denoting it is severe weather rated.

Mastercraft Glacier Grip II Tire Review

The tread features deeper grooves around the tire, as well as notched circumferential grooves which result in more efficient traction on wet or slush covered road surfaces. It also aids in reducing the risk of hydroplaning when driving on rain soaked pavement, although this is not a major focus for this model.

To further increase winter performance, Mastercraft utilizes D-Squared sipes in a zig-zag pattern that have proven to be very effective for driving in deep snow, hard-pack and ice. In addition, the Glacier Grip II is pinned for adding studs to maximize traction on ice if you need it.

Mastercraft offers a wide range of 14-18 inch sizes that carry either an S or T-speed rating. A limited tread warranty is also included.

Pros

  • Excellent snow traction
  • Hard-pack and ice grip is above average
  • Value for the money is very good

Cons

  • Wet traction
  • A little more noise than others in this class

Overall Thoughts

As a division of Cooper Tire, Mastercraft has a number of tires in their lineup that perform quite well, and the Glacier Grip II is no exception. Traction on snow and ice is impressive and gives you confidence when facing difficult winter road conditions.

You’ll find very good grip on hard-pack and icy road surfaces. Braking and acceleration are average in our opinion, but above many in the value-class of tires.

One area that could be improved would be this tire’s wet traction. Although it gets you around just fine, the grip on wet streets is a bit lower than what you find on other top winter tires like the Bridgestone Blizzaks or Michelin X-Ice. That said, this is a common complaint for most every dedicated winter tire.

Overall, for a value-priced winter tire, the Glacier Grip II is one of the better models available today.
