Mastercraft Courser AXT Tire Review & Rating

The Mastercraft Courser AXT all-terrain tire is built for drivers of all types of pickups, SUV’s and other 4×4’s. It’s been designed with a robust list of features that provide traction for weekend off-road use, as well as the everyday driver for the highway.

A proprietary tread compound utilizes silica in its makeup that is intended to improve the tire’s traction on wet or snow covered pavement, while also enhancing overall performance and treadlife.

Mastercraft Courser AXT Tire Review

The tread pattern features a 5-rib design that has been molded with 12% more lateral grooves than the tire’s predecessor, to further maximize grip on uncertain terrain.

Wide circumferential grooves around the tire feature a zig-zag pattern to improve traction on mud, dirt, sand and other soft surfaces, as well as on snow and light ice. Alternating scallops further increase performance off the beaten path.

The Mastercraft AXT is available in a wide variety of LT sizes that range from 15-20 inches. There’s also a 50K mile tread life warranty included on all sizes.

Pros

  • Reliable on-road traction and handling on dry, wet or snow covered surfaces
  • Good performance in lighter off-road terrain
  • Priced lower than many comparable name brand models

Cons

  • A little extra road noise
  • Traction on rougher terrain could be improved

Overall Thoughts

Mastercraft, which is manufactured under the Cooper Tire umbrella, has produced a reasonably priced all-terrain tire that delivers pretty solid overall performance both on or off road. The tread design is similar to the Cooper AT3, which is a very good tire in itself.

The AXT is an ideal fit for drivers who plan to use the tire as a daily driver and as a weekend off the path in light terrain type of scenario. You’ll find it rides well in light mud, sand, gravel, dirt and grass. It also does quite well in moderate to heavy snow. Don’t expect great rock performance or even heavy mud use. It simply is not built for it.

While not up to the level of the top performers in the all-terrain class like the BFG T/A KO2, Firestone Destination A/T or Michelin LTX AT2 among others, the Mastercraft AXT does offer good traction and handling and may save you some money in the process. We give it a rank in the middle of this class.

  1. Like they say the tire is good at holding, making Noise an rough ride. Had mine re balanced at each rotation, that seemed to help. Honestly I installed these at 28k on my F150 an it’s got almost 75k on it today. But it’s a 10ply LT tire on a 1/2t truck so you can expect a compromised ride an noise level. I have no complaints they still look good an probably in the south they would last me to 80-90k miles. But it snows here in WV so time for replacements. Price has double tho so looking for a new off brand.

  2. Put a set of these on my Ram 1500 and when you get up to 60 mph the vibration is so bad it would shake your drink out of your hand. Took back to the dealer and they balanced the tires again but this did not do any good. I had goodyear tires on it before and had no problems. I do not recommend these mastercraft tires and I will be putting Goodyear’s back on I hope the mastercraft tires fit one of my trailers.

  3. I got this AXT 70 R17 about 3 yrs ago, it was great traction and quiet for this aggressive tires, even I pull for 25feet travel trailer for long miles with ATV and 2 heavy kayaks on top of my 2014 Silverado 6 cylinder,it’s no problem! even Colorado Vail pass as you know it’s so steep but my truck with AXT tires were keep going up without rushing power and sandy gravel road in New Mexico also nice and smoothly driven. Then after while I got a flat tire, unlikely, so I did plugged, air is hold for about a year then seem to be small air leak showed in psi gauge,I went home town tire store I was installed AXT. They plugged from inside tire also rotated tires, so Air is no longer leaks, I’m ready for another trip then pulled my camper for about 120 miles then that plugged tire was Exploded!!! So this point, good thing no traffic, I was safely pullover then changed my tire. Just be careful when plugged into a Tire, don’t trust for heavy load, I done ✅ it. Other wise? Great tires for good price, I’m gonna get more this AXT tires from craig list for only a $100 buck for 4set! keep as my spare.

  4. I’ve had these tires in the past and they were not bad for money. I am not a 4 wheeling kinda guy. Therefore, most of my action was on the highway, gravel, sand and snow. I never had a complaint over these 315/75 R16 until they wore down. The ride went from 8.5 down to about 3.5 maybe a 4. I kept them rotated with every oil change. Some where betwen 3500 to 5000 miles. Always front to back and right to left. Never had any uneven wear. I switched up from those tires and went to a Yokohama Geolander 315/75 R16. They look good and ride was about the same as the MasterCraft’s. Except they were louder. Now, here are in July 2020 and I found a complete set for $400.00. You know I did! They will be installed next week along with New ProComp Series shocks. Old, weak, and bad, shocks will chew up a pair of big tires no matter how you rotate them or what name brand.
315/75 16 MasterCrafters, for the price, are definitely a 8.5 for quality, 7.5 ride, 8 noise, 10 price!

  5. I’ve had these on my 13 Silverado Z71 and they weren’t on the truck two years and now have to get new tires. The tires went bald after rotating them religiously. I only travel 7 miles to and from work. I do not drive recklessly and am a cautious driver. I’m in pleased with these tires and will Never buy anything from Mastercraft any more!

  6. I bought a set of these axt and am very happy. For the price they are of good quality mine are quite and traction in snow is very suprising. Good bang for the buck. 275/70/17 on 2011 silverado

  7. My first set of Mastercraft Courser AXT 17″ tires miles less than 1 year and under 6,000. Today I had a blow out on the interstate in heavy traffic. I had to roll it about a half mile to get off the intestate. Dealer says the salesman, after looking at pictures said the tire went flat and I just rolled it. Said I must have had low tire pressure and caused it to heat up and blow. Today was a 60 degree morning and I had driven approximately 6 miles. Will be talking further with the Dealer tomorrow.

  8. I purchased 4 – 275-70-18 tires on my 2016 silverado. First few months tires were great , ride was great noise not bad for this type tire. After the first rotation noice and vibration has increased to the point the truck vibrates and people dont like to ride in the truck.
My truck is used to transport customers to lunch and to events that visit from other countries. Now its embarrising, tire tread looks like new but ride is embarrising. Im tryiing wall mart one more time then looking for other remendy.
    Frusterated!

  9. These are made by Cooper and very similar to the Discoverer AT3. Should be on par performance I would think.

  10. I have a set on my 1999 GMC 2500 Sierra. They have been a good tire so far in many different conditions, from sand roads to light mud, and rain. I haven’t had a chance for snow yet so don’t know how they do there. Overall wear is great, had them a year now and see little wear so far!.. for the price I will definitely buy another set!

  11. Call me crazy but I wanted a more aggressive tire on my Honda Element so I got a set of these. Pros: good traction cons: lower gas millage, heavy road noise, and they’re tempermental. I didn’t rotate then well enough and they wore out (unevenly) in about a year and a half 25-30K miles (lots of highway). If I’d taken better care of them I might have gotten another 10-20K out of them based on tread left in the unworn areas. I also had trouble with them not holding air. I recommend road hazard coverage.

  12. i would like to know how much the 285/55/20 master-craft courser axt weigh. It’s weird that they don’t note that anywhere. I’m considering this tire for my 2015 Silverado 1500 4×4 high country crew cab.
