Kelly Safari ATR Tire Review & Rating

The Kelly Safari ATR is designed for drivers who seek both on and off-road performance for their pickup or SUV without having to spend an arm and a leg. Engineered to provide year-round traction and handling, the Safari ATR is priced to be a budget-friendly option among other tires in its class.

A tougher all-terrain tread compound features larger shoulder blocks for increased traction on dry road surfaces. Wider tread grooves enhance wet handling performance and channel away water from under the tread, while also helping to eject rocks from the grooves.

The tread design optimizes grip for off-road performance in light terrain. Self-cleaning traction grooves do an adequate job of propelling mud, snow and other debris away from the tread for better traction. Expect good grip on grass, dirt, light mud, gravel and other terrain. This is also an ideal tire for drivers who live in rural areas and travel spend quite a bit of time traveling on gravel roads.

Inside the tire you will find two steel belts that are nylon reinforced for added strength and durability throughout the speed zone. A polyester cord body increases ride comfort and promotes more even treadwear. Kelly offers sizes from 15-20 inches, and has optional LT sizes with C, D and E load ranges as well. A 40,000 or 50,000 mile tread guarantee is also included depending on size selected.

Pros

  • Very good dry and wet traction, as well as snow
  • Off-road light terrain traction doesn’t disappoint
  • Tires are surprisingly quiet
  • Outstanding value for the lower cost

Cons

  • Would like to see a little more treadlife

Overall Thoughts

The Safari ATR is simply a good performing all-around light-duty AT tire. Expect to find excellent traction on the road, including in the snow or on ice, as well as off-road. The tire stands up to all types of light terrain and does a remarkably good job. However, deep mud is not something you would want to take this tire through, as it was never designed to be a mud tire.

Ride quality is better than average on this tire. It rides among the most quiet tire in its class, which may be surprising due to its lower price. Sure, it is not the scale of a more expensive Michelin LTX tire, but it is very comfortable nonetheless.

Overall, if you’re looking for solid performing light-duty all-terrain tire and want to save a little extra money, this Kelly tire is a nice choice.

  1. I currently have 94,000 miles on my safari tires, 44,000 more than the rating. And probably will make it to 100,000 miles. Toyota prerunner 2005
