GT Radial Champiro IcePro SUV Tire Review & Rating

Taking a cue from the popular IcePro winter tire, the GT Radial Champiro IcePro SUV has a similar list of features as the standard IcePro tire, except it’s been specifically designed for use with SUVs, larger crossovers and pickup trucks. This studdable tire is built for reliability in extreme winter driving conditions, while also giving a quiet, comfortable ride.

GT Radial uses a new, specially designed silica compound that was created to keep this model more pliable in colder temperatures. This gives the tire a boost in traction and handling on snow and ice when the temperatures drop.

GT Radial Champiro IcePro SUV Tire Review

The tire’s tread pattern features a unique lateral groove design that not only evacuates water from under the tread when driving on wet pavement, but it also helps in removing snow, slush, and ice from the contact area.

This model is fully studdable and has been engineered with optimal stud distribution points in mind, so that traction is enhanced in extreme weather conditions if you find yourself needing to add studs.

The IcePro SUV is available in a wide range of sizes ranging from 15-19 inches in either T or H-speed ratings. A limited tread warranty is also included.

Pros

  • Excellent traction in snow, slush, and ice
  • Silica compound remains pliable in temperatures under 45 degrees
  • Value-priced with performance features

Cons

  • Small boost in braking on deeper ice

Overall Thoughts

If you’ve heard good things about GT Radial’s IcePro series of winter tires but own an SUV, the good news is that the same feature set available to drivers of passenger vehicles is now available to you. This tire is a solid offering that is more reasonably priced than many in this class. It has all of the features you’d typically be looking for in a winter tire, including a deep, studdable tread pattern made of a flexible silica compound.

If you drive in severe winter weather conditions, the ability to stud this tire can make all the difference between good traction and excellent traction over heavy snow and ice. The tradeoff of course is an increase in road noise, but that is certainly no surprise.

Ride comfort and in-vehicle noise are always a secondary consideration in the design of winter tires. The goal is to keep you on the road-and this tire can do exactly that. That being the case, this model is not as loud as many others sold today.

With plenty of variety in the winter tire marketplace, the IcePro SUV can hold its own, particularly in the pricing arena. For the budget-minded driver who doesn’t want to sacrifice performance, this is a good buy.
