Goodyear Wrangler RT/S Tire Review & Rating

The Wrangler RT/S from Goodyear is designed to provide predictable on-road year round traction with capable off-road handling in light terrain. Over the years the RTS has been used as original equipment on pickups like the Ford F-150 and Dodge Dakota among others.

A tougher all-season tread compound combines with a computer optimized tread design for enhanced traction on dry, wet and snow covered surfaces. The tire’s continuous tread lug design further increases ride comfort and helps deliver reduced road noise.

Goodyear Wrangler RT/S Tire Review

Circumferential grooves around the tread increase wet traction and help channel away water from under the tread. Multiple lateral grooves and slots are built to improve performance on snow and other winter weather road conditions.

Inside the tire you will find two steel belts for added strength and durability, along with a two-ply polyester cord body that adds increased handling and steering response. It also promotes more even treadwear and longer overall treadlife. Goodyear offers sizes from 15-16 inches for the RT/S.

Pros

  • Very good dry traction
  • Ride is comfortable
  • Long lasting treadlife

Cons

  • Wet pavement traction could be better
  • Winter handling abilities

Overall Thoughts

The RT/S ranks as a middle of the class performer. We like the dry traction this tire provides, as well as the predictable steering response. Another area this tire excels in is its longer treadlife. This is also an area that other drivers mention in their reviews on this tire.

Performance on wet road surfaces is a different story on this tire. Whether the roads are damp or soaked under a heavy rain, this tire has issues in not sliding around. The same applies on snow or ice as well. The word here is to slow down and use added caution.

Overall, this is not one of Goodyear’s best tires in their Wrangler lineup. No, it’s not terrible by any stretch, but we would recommend checking into other models like the Michelin Defender LTX M/S or Yokohama YK-HTX among others that deliver better all-around performance.

  1. I have a set I bought in 2011 have 4600 miles on them still in pristine condition. Always rode a little bit rough tho.only drive 98 GMC win I feel like it 58000 miles

  2. I had two sets on a 2001 Explorer Sport 2 Door 4×4. I got about 77K mi out of each set of 4 with impressive even tread-wear. I was always able to out drive anything else on the road in inclement weather. Once drove to FL from NY through the mountains, pulling a trailer, w a rowboat, Honda 4Trax, & luggage. The drive uphill in a tremendous hail storm, lost traction briefly twice, still out driving everyone around me. I was hoping to get a third set, when it became obvious Wrangler RT/S 255/70R16 was not in-stock anywhere. When I bought one at Cole Muffler they mentioned Wrangler RT/S is special run model. Upon researching a replacement tire, I discovered Cooper Discoverer AT3 4S, this should out preform the Wrangler RT/S.
