Goodyear Wrangler ArmorTrac Tire Review & Rating

The Wrangler ArmorTrac from Goodyear is engineered to deliver increased traction and performance both on or off-road. Made to fit a wide variety of trucks and SUV’s, this tire sports a number of tread design features that are innovative and add more versatility and value.

A tough truck tread compound that is made to increase resistance to cuts, chips and tears combines with a symmetric tread pattern for enhanced toughness and added drivability. The tire’s treadblock design and larger shoulder blocks increase dry traction, while the added siping around the tire provides enhanced grip on wet road surfaces as well as on snow and other winter weather road conditions.

Goodyear Wrangler ArmorTrac Tire Review

The ArmorTrac’s open tread pattern is built to provide increased off-road performance in a variety of terrains. An optimized void-to-tread ratio gives this tire a better ability to clean itself of mud, stones and other debris for maximum traction. A built-in rim protector adds protection against damages to your expensive wheels whether on or off-road.

Inside the tire you will find two steel belts for added strength. LT sizes are E load rated for carrying heavier loads. Sizes are available from 15-20 inches, and P-metric models come with a 50,000 mile tread guarantee.

Pros

  • Good on-road dry traction
  • Off-road performance is very good
  • Treadlife is long lasting

Cons

  • A little extra noise as you might expect

Overall Thoughts

Although not nearly as popular as the Silent Armor, the ArmorTrac offers somewhat similar performance as you get from the SA. Traction and handling is good on dry road surfaces and adequate on wet or snow covered pavement.

Off-road is where this tire provides a higher level of performance. Traction on rock, mud, gravel and other terrain is pretty good. The tire cleans itself out in a decent manner as well. Treadlife is longer than you might expect, but it can be at the expense of comfort over large bumps, potholes and other obstacles on-road.

Noise is a little more pronounced as you would imagine, although it is not terrible. We’ve heard worse. Overall, we rank this model in the middle of its class. It’s priced lower than similar tires, which makes it a nice value.

  1. 2008 Dodge Ram Mega cab Laramie 4×4 purchased new in 2008. This truck rarely drives off road and is used mostly for highway trips with about 1/10 of the mileage pulling a 6,500 lb camper trailer. It came with BF Goodrich, Rugged Trail T/As that performed well up to 51,000 miles. I decided to replace them with Goodyear Wrangler ArmorTracs thinking it would be a better tire based on reviews at the time and boy was I wrong. I noticed an immediate loss of handling, increased road noise and less stability around winding curves.
My truck now has 83,000 miles. Due to tread wear and performance, I had to replace the Goodyears after just 32,000 miles.
My front end alignment is good. I rotate my tires at 10,000 mile intervals. The Goodyear’s tire wear was even but worn more than expected at that mileage. I noticed the truck losing traction around turns on wet roads. I probably could have driven another 5,000 miles on the Goodyear tires but I didn’t feel the tires were safe with winter coming and the poor performance on wet roads. I went back to the BFG Rugged Trails that proved to be the better tire for about the same price. I paid $950.00 with mount and balance included. I have no affiliation with Goodyear or BF Goodrich and I am writing this review only to help others make an informed decision. I also have a 2017 Hyundai Sante Fe with 54,000 miles and the Kumho Crugen tires are performing very well and will probably make it to 65,000 miles.

  2. Replaced my factory installed tires with aftermarket Goodyear armortracs . I really like them now they look. Won’t get bald fast like some mud tires I had. So I got these for off road. And to use on highways on weekends.
