Goodyear Viva Authority Fuel Max Tire Review & Rating

The Goodyear Viva Authority Fuel Max all-season tire claims to provide dependable traction and handling to go with added fuel economy. Designed for coupes, sedans, smaller trucks and SUV’s, the Fuel Max’s all-weather tread pattern is said save drivers upwards of 2,600 miles over the lifetime of the tire.

A special fuel-saving tread compound is the main selling point of this tire as it boasts of providing considerable gas savings, something we will discuss later on. The tire’s all-season compound delivers very good dry traction and cornering grip. Steering is responsive and gives pretty good feedback due in part to offset tread blocks.

Goodyear Viva Authority Fuel Max Tire Review

Four circumferential grooves and lateral grooves eliminate water from under the tire to produce adequate traction on wet pavement. The tread sequence further helps water move away from the tire so that handling and loss of control due to hydroplaning or light snow is kept to a minimum.

Noise is kept low as a result of the fuel-saving compound and center rib grooves that also lower energy loss. Road noise is minimal even when driving at highway speeds.

Inside the tire are two steel belts and a polyester cord body that add strength and durability to the tread. Goodyear offers tire sizes ranging from 16-17 inches, and a tread life warranty of 65,000 miles.

Pros

  • Improved fuel efficiency
  • All-season traction
  • Ride comfort

Cons

  • Poor tread life

Overall Thoughts

The enticing aspect of these tires is the fuel-saving tread compound. While we were happy to see a tire that is focused on fuel efficiency, it seems that it can be hit or miss depending on who is driving. Some drivers have reported nice gains, while others have not seen much change.

Overall traction and handling is good on dry or wet pavement. Winter handling is decent in light snow, but not so good in heavier snow or on ice.

The biggest area of concern for this tire is the poor tread life. Review after review from other drivers back this up. Many drivers have complained of only reaching 20,000-30,000 miles before having to replace the tires. Few reach the 65,000 mile mark which is the length of the warranty. That is unacceptable for a tire in this price range and not one that we can recommend.
