Goodyear Fortera HL Tire Review & Rating
The Goodyear Fortera HL is used as original equipment on a number of different pickups, crossovers and SUV’s. Featuring an all-season tread design, the HL is engineered to provide year round traction and handling to go with a smoother and more comfortable ride.
An all-season tread compound and computer-optimized symmetric tread pattern provide increased traction and handling on both dry or wet roads. The larger tread blocks add more cornering grip on dry pavement, while the center ribs enhance steering response and stability, while increasing overall handling.
Staggered circumferential grooves, curved lateral grooves and the tire’s added sipes give this tire added performance on wet and snow covered road surfaces. The computer tread design further reduces outside road noise to add better overall ride comfort on this tire.
Inside the tire you will find two steel belts that combine with a polyester cord body for added strength and durability. They also increase ride quality and promote more even treadwear. Goodyear offers sizes in 17-20 inches and with T and S-speed ratings. In addition, there is also a 60,000 mile tread guarantee included.
Pros
- Dry traction and braking are very good
- Steering is crisp and responsive
- Comfortable tire to ride on
- 60,000 mile warranty
Cons
- Tires tend to get noisy as they wear down
- Treadlife could be better
Overall Thoughts
This tire gets mixed reviews from us. On one hand we like the dry traction and braking capabilities this tire displays. They are very good among all other tires in this class. Ride comfort is good and the tire carries a nice warranty. Add in the lower price point, among major brands that is, and you have some pretty good reasons to buy.
On the other hand this tire tends to get noisy as it wears down, which is exactly what reviews online have repeatedly stated. Winter handling is ok in light snow, although this is not a winter tire and it shows when it begins piling up or there is ice on the pavement. Tread life is another area that could use improvements as well. Others have mentioned getting just 30,000-40,000 miles out of the tread.
Overall, we rank this model in the lower half of all-season truck/SUV tires. While delivering adequate performance for most drivers, it falls short of many other tires in this category.

Terrible tires. The worst performance in terms of tread ware of any tire I have ever purchased. I managed to get 5 years out of the original OE tires on my Durango. After replacing those with these, I have only managed to get about 28k miles out of them driving the exact same route. Will never buy these again and absolutely would not recommend.
I got 75k on mine. Will buy again
These tires wear out in about four years,do not recommend this tires, bad quality.
Simple had mind about a year 20 000 on them NOT A GOOD TIRE IN RAIN OR ICES ROADS. ..
On 10/02/2014 on advice of Chevrolet dealor I purchased 4 Goodyear Fortera HL tires, size P245/65R17 tires for my 2008 Trailblazer,a 60000 mile tire.On 2/22/2020 at 24867 miles they were worn out & had to be replaced, like so many other revues I have read .Richard Dunedin,Fl.
I bought a set about a year ago, tread is still good but have been dealing with hydroplaning in light rain. Scared what’s gonna happen on icy roads.
I have around 56K on mine. Two are down to the wear bars, but the other two still have about 2/32″ before they are at the bars. Vehicle is a 2015 Durango SXT.
This tire is NOT worth the money. I have them on my 2011 Ford Explorer and all 4 of my P245/65R17 Fortera HL tires are evenly worn down to the wear bars at 19, 800 miles. I’ve been to two Goodyear dealers and since they came on my car when it was new they told me to “go see Ford”. Guess what, Ford says “go see Goodyear”. That is some wonderful 60,000 mile warranty they offer. I don’t think my car will see anymore Goodyear tires unless I can get some warranty relief.
i just hit 70k miles on mine and replaced today… driving aggressively can also cause excessive wear… js
