Goodyear FUELMAX S Performance: Review & Rating

The Fuelmax S Performance was introduced by Goodyear at IAA Commercial Vehicles 2018 and is part of its most fuel-effective tire range to date. The Fuelmax performance long-haul steer tires are the first Goodyear tires to feature fully silica-tread-compound technology. The product boasts EU tire-label grade ‘A’ for fuel-efficiency and also fulfills the 3PMSF (Three Peak Mountain Snowflake) winter tire requirements. Additionally, the high-net-to gross ratio in partnership with low tread depth allows these tires to extend optimized mileage and lower rolling resistance.

The new Fuelmax S comes stocked with IntelliMax Groove technology, an optimized cavity shape, alongside other innovations to result in enhanced fuel efficiency.  The Fuelmax S Performance tires enable dedicated long-haul fleets to maximize fuel savings and assist truck manufacturers to meet increasingly pushy European Union CO2 targets. The Fuelmax S model is expected to decrease 15% Heavy Duty Automobile CO2 emissions by 2025 and about 30% by 2030.

Goodyear is one of the largest global tire companies, manufacturing its products in 48 facilities spread around 22 countries. Its Innovation-Centers in Colmar-Berg, Luxembourg and Akron, Ohio are crafting state-of-the-art products that are setting the performance and technology standard for the industry.

Pros

  • The Fuelmax S features the IntelliMax Groove Technology
  • The product offers optimized rolling resistance during tire wear
  • The high-net-to-gross ratio optimizes wearable rubber volume with minimized tread depth
  • The tire comes in an optimized cavity shape
  • The optimized blade angles assist in enhancing wet grip and rolling resistance

Cons

  • As of October 2018, the Goodyear Fuelmax D Performance tires haven’t accumulated enough road miles to reveal solid cons.

FUELMAX S PERFORMANCE

The Fuelmax S Performance steer tires comprise sizes 385/55R22.5 and 315/70R22.5. The 385/55R22.5 steer tires have six ribs, and the 315/70R22.5 have five with both having tread capacity to streamline regular wear and water distribution. Moreover, the wet braking performance is sustained well into the functional life of the tires.

In fact, the combination of Fuelmax S Performance steer tires with Goodyear’s Fuelmax T trailer tires shall enhance CO2 reductions and consistent fuel savings. A 100 vehicles strong long-haul fleet using this tire combination can save up to 214,000L of diesel per year and lessen nearly 557,000 kg of CO2. This results in savings to the tune of roughly $340,000.

The estimations mentioned above are centered on a 4×2 40-tonne tractor with Goodyear Fuelmax T trailer tires operating in long-haul service having an average fuel consumption of 30 litre/100 km, and a yearly mileage of 100,000 km. Admittedly, the actual results shall vary based on (but not restricted to) weather and road conditions, wear conditions, driving style, tire pressure, tire size, and vehicle maintenance.

IntelliMax Groove Technology

The Fuelmax S overseas the launching of the ultra-modern IntelliMax Groove Technology. It features in the tread design and renders enhanced rolling resistance in contrast to its predecessors. A patented manufacturing technique enables a concealed pattern to be shaped into the tire.

Moreover, the three hidden raindrop-grooves shut when rolling via the footprint. The ribs assist one another to stiffen up the tread. Also, the IntelliMax grooves become active when the tire is 50% worn. Also, since the tread depth is less the rib movement is depressed and, therefore, doesn’t need the assistance of the shut IntelliMax grooves.

Sizes Available

The Fuelmax S Performance steer tire is available in the following four sizes:

  • 295/80R22.5
  • 315/60R22.5
  • 315/70R22.5
  • 315/80R22.5

  1. I purchased a set of TowMax tires for my rv. They were all properly inflated and did not drive over the recommended speed and 3 out of the 4 had belt separation after less than 800 miles on them. They are the worse tire I’ve ever owned. If you don’t want trouble on the road, DO NOT buy these tires. They are JUNK!
