Goodyear Eagle RS-A Tire Review & Rating

The Eagle RS-A is one of Goodyear’s most popular high performance all-season tires. The fact that it is used as original equipment on many of today’s sport coupes, sedans and law enforcement vehicles, in addition to being a top selling replacement tire, speaks volumes on the performance that it should deliver.

A high performance all-season tread compound combines with an asymmetric tread pattern to increase dry and wet traction. The tire’s shoulder tread blocks and wider lateral grooves enhance cornering grip and provide good steering feel and response. This is an area we have heard other drivers talk about in positive terms in reviews of this model.

Four circumferential grooves and the added lateral grooves help channel away water from under the tread and reduce the risk of hydroplaning in wet weather. This model is M+S rated and designed for added handling on light snow covered road surfaces. (We talk more on this in our overall thoughts on this tire.)

Inside the tire you will find two steel belts that are nylon reinforced for added strength and durability at higher speeds. A polyester cord body adds to ride comfort. Sizes are available from 15-20 inches, and in speed ratings from H to Y.

Pros

  • Dry traction and cornering grip are very good
  • Steering is crisp and responsive
  • Tire rides comfortably

Cons

  • Winter handling performance is lacking
  • Would like to see a little more wet pavement traction
  • Treadwear

Overall Thoughts

When driving on the RS-A, you’ll find it delivers more than adequate traction on dry road surfaces. Cornering is pretty good for an all-season tire and the steering is responsive at all speeds. The ride is comfortable for the most part and road noise is about average among tires in this class.

On the other hand there are a number of issues that could be improved on, with winter traction being one of the biggest. Simply stated, it is lacking in a big way. We can only say that if you’re going to drive on snow and ice covered road surfaces on this tire… be careful and use caution. Too many drivers have said the same things about this tire and the problems it has in winter conditions.

Wet pavement handling is another area we would like to see improvements in, although it is not the worst we’ve reviewed by any means. It’s just that it lacks a little of the confidence that you would find in tires like the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3 or even Goodyear’s Eagle Sport All Season to name a few. Finally, treadlife has shown to be well below average for too many drivers.

Overall, we give the RS-A a rank in the middle to lower half of its class.

  1. I bought a retired 2010 dodge charger police speed car and it has the goodyear eagle rs-a 225/60r18 99w and i think they are amazing i like to go fast and ive had my car at 168 mph on an empty highway and they corner so well and really hug the road and perform well at high speeds they do spin easy in the rain but thats prolly my fault but i will say when i lower my rear tire pressure to 26lbs they hook really well and make launch control very fun will definitely be getting another set when needed

  2. Hard to say why some are getting poor performance and low mileage out of these tires…l have driven professionally for 45 years and conservatively approximately 3 million miles…l have to say these are some of the best tires I’ve driven on…as far as wet low grip conditions go, I’m way too careful as to not push any tire passed it’s limitations, especially through turns…perhaps the type of vehicle design and weight balance throughout the vehicle can make a huge difference…l drive a low profile mid size CTS and had these tires on my previous somewhat larger car being DTS and can say these tires are a great fit for these vehicles…I’d be curious to see how much better for those having a poor experience with these, would do with other brands and models mounted on the same vehicles…hope this info was helpful…

  3. I purchased a used set of the rs-a’s from a used tire dealer who has a contract with the state police…my car had 49k miles at the time and l just replaced them with another set at 92k… that’s 43k on a used set and l truly believe I could have squeezed another 10k out of them if l pushed it…I’ve seen one spec sheet rate the tire at 40k, so l was surprised to get what I got…l have no clue what mileage was on them when purchased, but if l had to guess, I’d have to say at least 10k+…I have to agree with the lacking of grip in wet conditions, especially on wet glassphalt, but I’m extra careful on wet roads anyway…can’t speak for snow and ice as l refuse to drive in those conditions on any tire…as far as those only getting between 14.5 and 26k, it’s hard to say or explain especially if they’re maintaining proper air pressure, alignment, balance, rotation, reasonable driving habits and city vs. highway mileage percentages which can make a huge difference…l use highway and interstate driving whenever possible and would say at least 70% of my driving is highway…as far as handling on dry pavement goes, whether be high speed highway or winding like country roads, these tires have always met my expectations and then some…after all, these are referred to as “police pursuit tires”…l drive a CTS, which is a low profile decent handling midsized sedan…l recommend these tires and hope this information was helpful…

  4. I bought an Acura RSX in 2019 and drive a lot for work. I have put 109,000 miles on my RS-A 255/45/r20. I rotate them every oil change and the dealer has been amazed that they have lasted this long. Almost all of these miles are on the highway but I am still very impressed with their longevity and performance. I am looking to buy a new set of RS-A’s this month.

  5. I had all 4 tires installed Feb 2019. I have driven ~14,500 miles. They were rotated once with oil change. Tires are pretty smooth in rear tires. I had noticed more slipping on wet roads. For $200 per tire, they should last more than 14,500 miles. This is my first experience with Goodyear and probably my last.

  6. I have a fresh set of eagles RSA 275/60 /r17 and they make a singing noise my wore out BFGs did not make . Discount tire said BFG does not make that tire any more, so I bought a set of Good Years eagle, not raised white letters like BFG. But right away I had a out of round tire that shook the truck from 55 to 75. raised it myself & spun thetires & could see right away the divers front left was humping up & down . discount took care or it , is smooth now ,no shake now. lost 1 hub cap normal. But I noticed right away these tires sing from about 40, to 75 that the BFGs did not do.

  7. I got 62000 miles on my 2014 GMC Acadia , rotating at every oil change, Bought it New …Replacing with this same RSA , Couldn’t ask for more …

  8. The Eagle RS-A’s came as OEM tires on my 2013 Chevy Impala LTZ which I bought used in 2013 with 17,000 miles on it. The car now has 36,000 miles on it. From day one, these tires had difficulty gripping in wet conditions, and although it corners pretty well, it even had trouble gripping in dry conditions going in a straight line (when adding acceleration and when braking). Forget about using these in snow (I live in Pennsylvania). As a for instance, on a dry macadam road on a bright sunny day, from a slow roll I started to pull out left to go around the car in front of me. As I started to accelerate to go around, a car started crossing the road on my left to pull into the same line I was starting to pull in to. I easily would get out into the left lane in front of the other car with just a little more acceleration. Imagine how I felt when the tires started spinning on me while accelerating, making a left turn into a passing lane in front of a car that should never have gotten close to me! No performance on these tires, and there’s at least 3/8 tread left on them.

    1. No way tread is 3/8 I bet it more on 3/32 you said u have 36k miles on them the tire is only good for 26k so your tires are probably bold. You should get them checked I can do turns at 50 without a problem on dry roads. Yes on bad snow days you have to be careful I had about 6/32 of tread and I the highway going 60 didnt feel to safe almost like drive on ice.. I just got new tire this week so won’t know until next winter..

      1. I got 90,000+ miles on my first set of RSA’s only changed them because of dry rot sitting in that how S Calif sun brought that on or i would have got 100 thousand from them with ease am now on my 2nd set with 126000 on the car but dress the tires often
