Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 Tire Review & Rating

The Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 is an aggressive looking, high-performance, summer tire that is designed to provide exceptional traction, grip and improved handling and fuel economy in dry and wet conditions. Goodyear has built the Asymmetric 3 to fit a wide range of vehicles including muscle cars, sports cars, sedans and other high performance vehicles.

Goodyear uses a unique grip booster tread compound that is suitable for use in the summer months and not designed for cold weather. This tread compound gives the tires their superior grip when they are used in warm or wet conditions and reduces the amount of wheel spin that can occur with high-performance vehicles.

This tire’s Active Braking Technology is an important addition to these tires because it reduces the braking distances required. Goodyear has carried out extensive tests on the Asymmetric 3 and found that on a wet road, braking distance is 9% shorter than the average braking distance of similar tires in this category. On a dry road, the braking difference is 4%.

An asymmetrical tread design that includes a continuous center rib adds to the solid feel of these tires, giving you much more control when you travel over rough surfaces or when you’re cornering.

The outer shoulder of the Goodyear Asymmetric 3 further increases its traction and thanks to the 4 wide circumferential grooves that are a key feature of these tires, you are less likely to experience hydroplane issues.

As well as providing excellent grip and handling, many drivers who have used and reviewed these tires consistently comment on how smooth and quiet the ride is since they installed these tires. The tread on Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 tires is much more stable than many other similar tires.

In addition, Asymmetric 3 has a polyester cord that supports two steel belts that are secured using spirally wrapped polyamide, adding strength and durability.

A reduction in noise has impressed many different types of high-performance vehicle owners. We believe they are quieter than Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 tires and this is primarily down to the SoundComfort technology that is used in this model. With this technology, a layer of polyurethane foam is placed around the inner liner of these tires and absorbs most sounds that are produced while you drive.

A rim protector protects your tires from damage caused by curbs, debris on the road or other hazards. Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 tires are available in 17-20 inch sizes, as well as in many run-flat sizes. All sizes sport a W or Y-speed rating.

Pros

  • Traction in dry and wet conditions
  • Better than average braking performance
  • Very quiet with noise reduction technology
  • Comfortable ride

Cons

  • Increase in harder cornering grip
  • Not as responsive as many others in this category

Overall Thoughts

An overwhelming number of drivers state that Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 tires are excellent summer tires and provide the grip and handling required in a modern high performance tire. While we agree with this to a certain point, we feel Goodyear has left a lot of performance on the table with this model.

On the plus side, the Asymmetric 3 offers good traction and handling on most road surfaces. Braking distances are reduced and this is one of the better tires when it comes to braking, whether on dry or wet pavement. Noise is not an issue with this tire, and the ride is comfortable.

On the negative side, we would like to see a big increase in higher speed cornering grip, as well as a bit more steering response. Other top tires in this class offer better performance in this area.

Overall, the Asymmetric 3 is a middle of the pack UHP summer tire in our opinion. If you’re looking for higher levels of performance you might want to go with other tires like the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S, Continental ExtremeContact Sport or other top models.

  1. I am finding this tire has my Focus St pulling left or right when on certain road conditions and that the car seems to sway left to right on most road surfaces.
It is dangerous at times, if you are travelling at 80 kph and the car suddenly jerks as the tire grabs the imperfection of the road surface.

    1. Hey Cory! Thanks for sharing your experience. Their cornering grip capabilities definitely had us concerned, but we were of the opinion that these are great summer tires and deliver great performance under dry and wet conditions.
