General Grabber Arctic LT Tire Review & Rating

Created to replace the Altimax Arctic line that has been currently available for several years, the new for 2015 General Grabber Arctic LT winter tire is specially designed with the latest in new tire technology to deliver dependable performance even in the most severe winter weather conditions. This Load Range E, 10-ply tire has been built to offer superior cold-weather flexibility, a longer lasting treadlife, and the kind of traction you expect when driving on snow, slush, freezing rain and icy road surfaces.

General Tire, which is a division of Continental Tire, has developed a unique cut and chip resistant tread compound which is specifically designed for winter driving. The tread features a symmetric tread pattern and angled interlocking sipes for increased bite on snow and ice.

General Grabber Arctic LT Tire Review

In addition, the Grabber Arctic LT has what they term “snow traction ridges”, which company engineers produced in an effort to provide drivers with improved traction in deep amounts of snow. These ridges also assist in providing enhanced acceleration, braking and cornering grip in winter conditions. The tire’s shoulder blocks are also intended to be stabilized by a reinforced buttress area.

Ride comfort and noise levels have generally been reported to be quite good in comparison to other models in the light pickup and light-duty commercial truck class. Naturally, the Arctic LT provides the ability to add optional metal studs into the shoulder and intermediate tread blocks for even more traction capabilities if needed.

Inside the tread General has added stronger steel belts that are spirally wrapped with nylon to increase the strength and durability to the tire. This model also features the mountain/snowflake emblem that shows it meets the requirements for use in severe snow conditions. General currently offers a range of sizes from an LT225/75R16 all the way up to LT275/65R20. A limited tread warranty is also included.

Pros

  • Traction in snow, ice, slush and other conditions
  • Braking and acceleration is better than many comparable tires
  • Comfortable ride
  • Treadwear

Cons

  • Limited size range

Overall Thoughts

Since the General Arctic LT was only recently released, it’s a bit early to say how well the tire has been received by other owners. We will have a much better idea into 2016. That said, we feel that at the moment it’s one of the better performing winter tires for larger SUV’s, light to heavy-duty trucks, and commercial vans. It stands up well against other tires such as the Firestone Winterforce LT, Goodyear Ultra Grip Ice WRT and Michelin LTX Winter.

Tests have shown the tire to brake an average of 2.5 seconds sooner than other tires in its category. On icy roads, those are valuable seconds that can make a huge difference in staying safe on the road. Ride comfort looks to be good overall, and this model will not drown you out with excessive noise like some tires will. While it’s too soon to really get a handle on how long the tread will hold up, early indications appear promising.

The tire’s number one shortcoming is likely its limited size range. We would like to see additional sizes offered, and this is something that General Tire may provide in the coming months. Overall, if you’re looking for a tough and capable winter tire that will get you through the most difficult winter conditions, as well as other rough terrain, the General Grabber Arctic LT is an excellent choice.
