Firestone FR690 Tire Review & Rating

Tire technology has been advancing at a rapid rate in recent years, however for many everyday drivers a solid and dependable tire is all that is needed. This is what Firestone was thinking when they introduced the FR690. Designed for drivers of passenger cars, family vans, coupes and budget crossovers, the FR690 is built to handle everyday driving needs for most commuters.

Its M+S rated all-season tread compound delivers dependable dry traction and cornering performance, while the tire’s three circumferential grooves are designed to evacuate water away from the tread and reduce the risk of hydroplaning.

Firestone FR690 Tire Review

The tread’s open slotted shoulders and lateral grooves help to increase grip in winter weather, something this tire does do a decent job with. Inside the tire are dual steel belts and polyester cord body that add durability and promote more even treadwear.

Pros

  • Good dry traction
  • Cornering grip on dry pavement
  • Ride comfort

Cons

  • Poor wet traction and braking
  • Road noise
  • Treadlife could be longer
  • No warranty

Overall Thoughts

The FR690 was designed to pretty much get you from point A to point B without all the bells and whistles. To that end, this tire does deliver good dry traction and cornering grip for an all-season tread design. The ride is comfortable unless you’re hitting larger bumps and potholes.

On the other hand, there are issues with wet traction and braking, especially in heavy rain. We’ve seen too many other driver reviews on this tire that mention the same thing. Beyond that, road noise is more pronounced than it should be, and treadlife has been a problem area for many as well. Finally, the lack of a mileage warranty is another disadvantage to these tires.

Overall, the FR690 is disappointing in its performance and we give it a ranking in the bottom half of the all-season class. There are far too many better tires on the market that cost the same or less and provide much better performance.
