Falken WildPeak A/T2 Tire Review & Rating

The Falken WildPeak A/T2 is designed to provide very capable off-road performance with a more subtle and comfortable ride quality that was somewhat lacking in the original Wild Peak AT.

So, what’s the difference between the original tire and this new AT2 model? In short, nothing on the outside. The tread pattern is the same as the original, which is a nice blend of looking aggressive yet civilized for everyday driving. The big changes are on the inside of the tire. The casing profile has been redesigned to provide added stability and control, as well as improving ride comfort levels.

Falken WildPeak A/T2 Tire Review

The major change is that the AT2 features a 2 ply construction instead of a 3 ply, and an optimized bead thickness, which allows the tire to carry a little less unsprung weight. This helps to further increase ride quality, but comes at the expense of puncture resistance and sidewall strength for those who are looking to push the tire through heavy, rough terrain or rock climbing, etc.

It is advised that you do not mix the AT2 with the original AT on the same axle of your truck or SUV. The reason being that the handling can be greatly affected.

The details on the rest of this model remain the same as they are in our original review on the Wild Peak AT. Falken offers sizes ranging from 16-18 inches and there is a 50K mile tread warranty included on this tire. Every tire is available with either a D or E load range rating.

Pros

  • Exceptional on and off-road traction
  • Steering is crisp and responsive
  • Very good ride comfort and surprisingly quiet ride
  • Outstanding treadlife and a 50,000 mile warranty
  • Excellent value for the money

Cons

  • Would like a little more mud traction
  • 2-ply construction

Overall Thoughts

The changes Falken has made to this tire have helped in the area of ride comfort and to a degree, lower road noise, which were needed for those who do the majority of their driving on pavement. The ride on the original, while not bad by any means, was a little rougher than on some of the more competitive AT tires on the market today. Now it’s a little more smooth and steady footed at highway speeds.

That said, the change from a 3-ply to a 2-ply design may leave some off-road enthusiasts a bit upset. Having that extra ply for added strength can be the difference in a sharp rock tearing into the sidewall and leaving you going nowhere, or riding right over it and continuing over rough terrain. For most drivers it will not be an issue. However, if you do quite a bit of serious off roading it is something to keep in mind. If that speaks to you, then we’d suggest sticking with the original Wild Peak AT instead.

Overall, like the original Wild Peak, we like this AT tire for its drivability both on and off road, as well as its increased ride comfort on the highway. Other reviews from tire owners confirm that the AT2 is a very good tire for the money.
