Dunlop Grandtrek AT23 Tire Review & Rating

The Grandtrek AT23 from Dunlop is built to provide confident all-season driving performance for owners of sport utility vehicles and larger crossovers. The AT23 has been used in most cases as original equipment on various Lexus and Toyota models over the past few years, as well as being available for vehicles that require different 18 inch fitments.

An all-season tread compound is M+S rated for increased performance in year-round driving conditions. As with most any tire made today, dry traction is very good. The tire’s continuous center rib increases steering response and stability throughout the speed range.

Four circumferential grooves around the tread are designed to channel away water and reduce the risk of hydroplaning for better wet traction and performance. That said, this is not an area where the AT23 excels. More on that in our overall thoughts.

Dunlop has added their 5-Pitch Technology to the tread in order to reduce outside road noise and give the tire a more quiet ride capability. Inside the tire you’ll find two steel belts for added strength and durability, as well as a polyester cord body for enhanced ride comfort.

Pros

  • Dry traction is very good
  • Comfortable ride

Cons

  • Wet traction is weak
  • Winter grip could be better
  • Tread life issues

Overall Thoughts

We were expecting better from the AT23 due in part to it being O.E. on Lexus and Toyota vehicles. While dry traction and ride comfort mark the highlights on this model, while other areas disappoint.

Wet traction and hydroplane issues are problematic on this tire, which is something that can be found in numerous reviews and comments from other drivers all over the net. It can be somewhat nerve racking at highway speeds in the rain. Poor snow and ice performance is yet another area that the AT23 doesn’t measure up as well as others in its class.

Overall, while the AT3 does a solid job in some areas, we give it a rank in the lower half of this class due to its poor wet performance. Tires such as the Michelin Defender LTX M/S and General Grabber HTS60 are much better all-around options.
