Cooper Discoverer ATR Tire Review & Rating

Regardless of where you are traveling, the Discoverer ATR from Cooper is designed to take you through even the harshest of terrains and weather conditions to get you there quickly and safely. Developed for drivers of pickups and SUV’s, the ATR features the latest in Cooper tire technology.

An all-season and all-terrain tread compound, along with V-Tech computer engineering, optimizes the tread profile to provide added treadwear and handling characteristics for increased performance.

Cooper Discoverer ATR Tire Review

Aggressive all-terrain handling and traction is enhanced through a 5-rib tread pattern that also sports lateral slots and wide sawtooth circumferential grooves that are deeper and provide additional traction. The grooves also increase handling on wet roads, while reducing the risk of hydroplaning.

A continuous center rib enhances tire stability and provides added steering response and feel on dry or wet road surfaces. Tread life is increased through the chamfered tread elements which give the tread better overall stability and works to eliminate uneven wear. The result is a longer treadlife, which is something that is mentioned by many drivers who own this tire.

Inside the tread you will find twin steel belts for added strength and durability. The ATR is built to carry a load capacity of up to 1 ton. Sizes of 14 to 20 inches are available on this model, and Cooper includes a 50,000 mile tread guarantee.

Pros

  • Excellent traction and handling on a wide range of off-road terrains
  • Dry, wet and snow covered on-road grip is very good
  • Steering response and feel is among best in this class
  • Outstanding treadwear and a 50,000 mile warranty

Cons

  • Would like to see a little less road noise

Overall Thoughts

Note: Cooper is discontinuing the ATR and replacing it with the all-new A/T3. Click Here to read our review on this new model.

Cooper has come up with an excellent all-around onand off-road tire in the Discoverer ATR. It handles all types of terrain with relative ease, while on-road driving is equally as impressive. The tires simply get you through anything in their way, and they do it all year round.Steering response is quite good with this tire.

The only area we would like to see improvement in is tread noise. To be fair though, these are AT tires and some noise is to be expected, although tires like the Michelin LTX AT2 and others are more quiet. Beyond that, the treadlife on the ATR is long and has a 50,000 mile warranty. Overall, we give it a rank in the middle of this class.
