Cooper Discoverer M+S Sport Tire Review & Rating

The Cooper Discoverer M+S Sport tire is a studless winter tire intended for use by drivers of all types of crossovers sport utility vehicles and pickups. With its M+S rating and Mountain Snowflake emblem, this offering from Cooper is built to provide drivers with improved snow and ice traction in the most severe winter weather conditions.

The tire was engineered with the manufacturer’s proprietary “Snow Groove” design technology, which aims to reduce tread stiffness and improve traction in these kinds of environments. Interestingly, “snow on snow” is generally considered to provide better traction than “snow on rubber”. This unique groove technology helps the tire retain snow near the outside of the tire for the “snow on snow”benefit.

Handling and cornering on this tire is enhanced through the added silica and zig-zag sipes that Cooper has incorporated, which help the tire bite into snow/ice to reduce sliding and decrease stopping distances. The tread compound is high in silica which keeps the tread blocks flexible, allowing for the tire to be used in significantly lower temperatures. The deeper zig-zag sipes are shaped to improve wet traction, and a nice feature here is that they are full-depth to last for the life of the tire.

While ride comfort is almost never something to brag about with any highly rated severe weather tire, the Discoverer M+S Sport offers a reasonable level of stability and comfort. While not a luxury touring level of ride comfort by any stretch, it doesn’t leave you with the feeling of needing to visit your local chiropractor.

The Discoverer M+S Sport is available in 16-19 inch sizes and come with T, H or Vspeed ratings. As with several other winter tires from Cooper, this offering includes a standard limited warranty.

Pros

  • Excellent snow traction, particularly for 4WD vehicles.
  • Snow and ice braking are above average
  • Reasonably priced

Cons

  • A little more noise than some others in this class
  • Treadlife could be better

Overall Thoughts

If you drive a pickup, crossover or SUV, the Cooper Discoverer M+S Sport is an affordable and reliable winter tire. While not the highest ranking tire in this category, in cold weather environments it will always out compete stock or other tires without a severe winter rating.

The tire provides more-than-adequate traction in snow, slush, and ice-particularly snow, thanks to Cooper’s “Snow Groove” design technology. While not considered all-terrain tires, if you happen to need to travel a dirt or rural road to get back home during the cold and wet months, these tires will almost certainly get the job done for you.

On the flipside, the tires are a bit noisy at highway speeds due in part to the tread design. That said, the level of ride comfort is better than many. The other area that catches our attention is the shorter treadlife that we’ve heard some drivers having. However, for the winter performance and lower price, it still provides pretty good value for the money.
