Cooper Discoverer A/TW Tire Review & Rating

As a unique hybrid offering, the Cooper Discoverer A/TW tire is built with the same all-terrain characteristics as the popular Discoverer A/T3, but with an additional boost in winter weather performance as well. In addition to a slew of standard all-terrain features on this Load Range E tire, it was also designed with micro-gauge corrugated siping to improve grip on icy roads, Cooper’s Snowgroove 2.0 technology, and mountain/snowflake emblem for a severe weather service rating.

The Cooper A/TW features a coupled silica tread compound which the company claims will deliver increased traction in below-freezing temperatures. As part of the company’s Snowgroove 2.0 technology, the tire’s siping was designed to maintain this traction not only when the temperature is low, but over heavy snow and ice. As for rain, larger-than-normal lateral grooves reduce the likelihood of hydroplaning.

Cooper Discoverer ATW Tire Review

Many all-terrain tires are notoriously loud out on the open road, so in an effort to reduce tire noise for the driver and passengers, Cooper has implemented their Computer Optimized Pitch Sequence. This means that the tire’s tread has been designed in such a way that noise is evenly dispersed. The result is a much quieter ride quality.

The Discoverer A/TW is available in sizes ranging from LT215/85R16 to LT275/65R20 and an S speed rating. Cooper offers its standard limited warranty for this tire.

Pros

  • Hybrid design allows for use in all-terrain and severe winter conditions
  • Excellent traction in both wet and dry conditions
  • Ride comfort is decent for an all-terrain tire
  • Consumer Reports has selected this tire as a best buy

Cons

  • Has some extra noise on the highway

Overall Thoughts

All-in-all, Cooper’s Discoverer A/TW is an excellent option for any driver looking for dependable all-terrain performance, as well as excellent traction on snow and ice. It truly delivers the best of both worlds. It features a tough and durable tread that is ideal for those living in rural areas who drive dirt and gravel roads on a regular basis, while also navigating harsh winter conditions.

The primary shortcoming of this tire is that it has a little extra noise on the open highway. While this is really nit-picking so to speak, if you’re someone who puts a premium on ride comfort this may not be your best bet.

Overall, it’s easy to see why other publications like Consumer Reports has had such positive things to say about this tire. It simply does its job when put to the test. Highly recommended.

  1. DON’T BUY THESE STYLE OF TIRES, THEY GET ROCKS PINCED IN TREADS AND THROWS OFF BALANCE, WORST TIRE i HAVE EVER HAD ON MY TRUCK AND THERE ONLY SEEING 6000KLM AND THERE COMING OFF.

    1. David that is dumb as hell rocks can get stuck in any tread of any tire. A tiny rock can’t throw a whole truck off balance

      1. I agree, any tire of this type can hold stones but they clear. As for traction in the wet, snow or ice, these are one of the best tires out there. I use my set full time all seasons in Ontario for 3 years now and still have enough tread for another season. Mine are installed on a Nissan Armada and the confidence these tires inspire during slippery conditions is outstanding. As for road noise on highways, I don’t hear them. My exhaust system has more volume. Great tires!!!
