Bridgestone Blizzak W965 Tire Review & Rating

The Blizzak W965 is Bridgestone’s studless snow and ice tire that is engineered for medium to heavy-duty use with its Load Range E rating. Designed for drivers of pickups, vans and commercial light trucks, the W965 is built to handle tough winter weather and road conditions, while pulling or carrying heavier loads.

A unique Tube Multicell tread compound, which provides the ability to disperse the thin film of water that the tire creates as it drives over snow and ice, combines with independent tread blocks to deliver enhanced traction on cold dry or wet pavement, as well as snow and ice.

High density zig-zag sipes around the tread give the tire biting edges that grip hard-packed snow and ice and deliver exceptional traction, even in below freezing temperatures.

Inside the tire you will find three steel belts that are nylon reinforced for maximum strength and durability, as well as increased tire uniformity. A polyester cord body adds to the overall ride quality, while also providing added strength and better treadwear. The tire is offered in 16-17 sizes.

Pros

  • Excellent snow and ice traction
  • Very good dry and wet handling
  • 8-10 ply rating makes this one tough and durable tire
  • Above average ride comfort

Cons

  • Treadlife could be a little longer
  • Tires are a bit heavier than others

Overall Thoughts

For drivers needing a tough, heavy-duty winter tire, the Blizzak W965 has some good things to offer. It provides exceptional snow and ice traction, while also delivering excellent performance on dry or wet road surfaces. The steering is responsive and predictable.

We like the tough 8-10 ply rating on this model. It holds up well and is hard to puncture or slice. The ride on this tire is comfortable and outside road noise is not excessive.

On the other hand, we would like to see a little longer treadlife. It’s good, just not great. This Blizzak tire is also a bit heavier, due in part to its tougher construction, so you might see a small loss in fuel efficiency. We’re talking perhaps 1-2 mpg. Overall, while we believe the Blizzak DM-V1 offers a little extra performance, this W965 is still impressive on the snow and ice.
