Bridgestone Turanza EL42 Tire Review & Rating

The Turanza EL42 from Bridgestone is used as original equipment on sport coupes, sedans, crossovers and mini vans from Toyota, Honda and a number of other auto makers. Engineered to deliver all-season traction and handling, the EL42 is available in 16-19 inch sizes.

An all-season tread compound and symmetric tread pattern provide increased traction and stability on dry road surfaces. A round-bottom groove design further enhances cornering and adds to the tire’s wet handling capabilities.

Four circumferential grooves expel water from under the tire and reduce the risk of hydroplaning, while multiple sipes around the tread, which are part of Bridgestone’s Proactive Tread Technology, deliver biting edges for added grip on wet or snow covered pavement.

Inside the tire you will find two steel belts that are nylon wrapped for additional strength and durability. The tire’s polyester cord body creates better overall ride comfort. The EL 42 is available with an H, V or W-speed rating.

Pros

  • Very good dry traction and handling
  • Steering is responsive

Cons

  • Winter traction is poor
  • Wet handling
  • Road noise
  • Treadlife

Overall Thoughts

Since the EL42 is so extensively used as OE on so many different vehicles, we had high hopes for its performance. To say the least, those hopes were quickly dashed by its poor performance in almost all aspects. Wet handling needs a boost to be sure. Hydroplaning has been an issue often mentioned in other driver reviews. This seems to only worsen as the tire ages.

Winter traction is poor and you hear the same thing time and time again… this is not a tire that does well on snow and ice. So if you live in an area that sees a lot of snow you may want to keep that in mind. Beyond that, road noise becomes more pronounced as the tire wears down, and tread life has been another huge disappointment as well.

Overall, it is difficult for us to highly recommend this tire over other much better performing tires in this class like the Continental TrueContact, General Altimax RT43 or Michelin Defender T+H among others. With that said, we rank this model in the lower half its class.
