Bridgestone Potenza S001 Tire Review & Rating

Designed to provide maximum summer driving performance, the Bridgestone Potenza S001 features the latest in tire technology and advancements. You know this is a tire for serious enthusiasts when it is used as original equipment on vehicles like the Ferrari F458 and many other prestigious sports cars from around the world.

A high-performance tread compound is matched up with an asymmetric tread pattern and larger high grip tread blocks on the outer shoulder to provide increased steering response and more precise dry traction and cornering performance. The unique off-center straight rib around the tread enhances stability at higher speeds and gives you more control, an area that this tire performs well.

Bridgestone Potenza S001 Tire Review

The S001 adds a wider groove design and high-angle lateral grooves in the tire’s intermediate ribs that work to channel away water from under the tread and reduce the risk of hydroplaning on wet road surfaces.

Driving comfort is not something that is ignored on this tire as tread noise is reduced through the new block design. Bridgestone has placed the grooves and lugs in away that maximizes noise suppression and increases ride comfort.

This tire also has a lower rolling resistance due to the use of light weight steel belted construction in the tread. The two steel belts are reinforced with an aramid and nylon cord that is designed to increase strength and durability at higher speeds. The sidewalls have been stiffened with rubber inserts for added comfort and braking performance. Sizes are available from 18-20 inches, and you can also get this tire in a run-flat version.

Pros

  • Excellent dry and wet traction
  • Quick steering response
  • Cornering grip is exceptional

Cons

  • Tread life

Overall Thoughts

You can tell just from taking one look at the S001 that this is a tire that’s going to give you some impressive dry traction and cornering performance. And you’re right, that is what this tire does best. It also has some impressive wet grip as well, which many drivers say is among the best in this class.

Steering is quick and very responsive due to the off-set rib, although under steer can be an issue for some. The biggest issue we have with this tire is the treadlife. Naturally, this can be due to driving habits, but we still feel it could be better.

Overall, this tire is a solid performer and we like the performance it provides. However, we feel it falls short of models such as the Michelin Pilot Super Sport and even the Potenza S-04 Pole Position.

  1. The Bridgestone S001 is the worst tire I’ve ever bought. On a straight line no reactions with small steering inputs, with heavier steering inputs the rear side of the car is slippery and tilting. Absolutely no good feeling, the tires feels way to soft and unstable. Tires mounted on my BMW E90 sedan with sport suspension. Cornering with the tires will feel likes your driving on ice with grip. No feeling and no response at all.
